basically u give the pt progestin for a few days ( im not sure..5 perhaps) and then stop. in normal menstrual physio, estrogen cozes proliferation in the initial half. progesterone acts on this endometrium in the second half. if the pt has anovulation/amenorrhea/ irregular bleeding, and unapposed estrogen is a coz ( eg in PCOS), progesterone acts on the estrogen primed endometrium. once u stop, withdrawal bleed occurs ( just like in menstruation) if no bleed occurs, failure of estrogen priming is indicated. a bleed also helps rule out obstructive anatomical etiologies for the amenorrhea
