Bronchoalveloar segments of lung with low ventilation/perfusion ratios may collapse when 100% O 2 is inhaled for 1 hr because:

a. pulmonary surfactant is inactivated
B. O2 toxicity causes alveolar edema
C. CO 2 elimination is greater than normal
D. interstitial edema arond small airways causes airway closure
E. gas is removed by blood faster than it enters the unit by ventilation
