kaplan q book 2006 mentions that if a rapis strep test is negative, we confirm it with culture. harrioson's says we do not.any ideas?

I have learnt that if a Rapid Strep test is negative then we should confirm that with a culture. I have not gone thru harrison but would stick with what I know, may be somebody else can enlighten , as of me I would go for culture.

I agree with sunny 2.If the rapid antigen test result is negative, however, the decision to treat should be based on culture, because the rapid test lacks sensitivity acc to my understanding.

well the ACP, "Thus, these tests are acceptable for clinical practice, and the Infectious Disease Society of America no longer recommends throat cultures to confirm the results of rapid antigen tests." its controversial ..hopefullty they wont ask [/left]

Does sound like a very controversial question to me. Unless some bizarre ethyology is suspected, no one asks for a culture that takes 2-3 days.
