Can a person on J1 change his residency program next year or is there any problem?

Can he change? Sure, he has to go through the applying and interviewing process which will be even harder because he is working a full time position. Unless you save your vacation for interviews. Then you run the risk of angering your current PD by asking for a LOR when you have only been there for a couple of months.

Lots of things to consider.

Good luck.

Sorry i dont have any info on this one .

Not 100% sure. I heard those on J1 can not repeat PGY 1. So you have to look for a PGY2 in this instance. I will check.

BBB/Anyone is k1 right?
My friends have told me that in residency contract is on annual basis and one can change without problem. Programs get 2nd yr residents as replacement. PDs dont feel bad about it.

Ofcourse they would feel bad about it. If you leave a program they have to interview few more people to fill in the position.

actually know a person who had his career "wrecked" after he requested his PD for a LOR to re-apply: this guy wanted to shift from FM to IM.

conclusion:

Keep FM as a backup if ya want, but do not accept it if you are not prepared to work in it for the rest of your life - and do not believe that the PD will be all ears when ya tell him that you want to give FM the boot for IM: you would have to be extremely lucky and the PD would have to be extremely "understanding" for this switch to happen smoothly.

(sounds a bit off-topic here, I know)
