I want to apply for preliminary internal medicine programs. Should I write a separate statement of purpose indicating why I need a prelim year. Iam at a loss for words and dont know as to what to write in the statement of purpose. when does one make the decision of choosing prelim year or categorical, while applying or while being interviewed? How easy is for an IMG's to get into prelim year? With scores of step1-88, step2-89, do I stand a fair chance? My second concern is the Visa issue. If I land in a J1 visa for prelim year, then do i have to leave the country at the end of one year, come back after 2 years and do the advanced program?I dont understand how it works.... please give me your valuable input BBB

Why do you want a one year program? And, if you do get a prelim spot, you can move into another residency without going home - it's the same visa, just a different program/hospital.

Thanks BBB. I want a one year prelim program in order to apply for a PY2 in radiology or nuclear medicine. Does the same rule apply for a H1 visa too?

No, an H at a cap exempt program is different than an H at a non-cap exempt program. So you are interviewing for Prelim and Radiology now? Best of luck.

you can write a PS for radiology and apply for prelim. explain why you have selected radiology and what you can do for them, and what is your future plans.
