when they give us 42 000 dollars/year, is it tax free? coz if it isn't I would be seriously concerned about the affodability of life in residency especially if one has children

No, it is the total salary...not the take home amount, tax will be deducted from that amount and Yes, pay is bad during residency...grin and bear.

No, it's taxed. State, local and federal. It's not subject to Social Security taxes if you are on a J1 visa. Residents every year through the country survive on that amount.....

So if I get the H1 visa I have to add the social security tax, the health insurance for my family, the money for the car, etc. etc. If you people say that we can live with the rest I trust you. It is written somewhere in the forum that this is 2-4 times the average stipend in the US. I can hardly believe it.

Hi one thing you all should look when selecting a program esp if u have choices, look for health insurance , whether it will cover your wife and child. Most of state universiies do not cover it fully, so you end up shelling ot abot 400 + dollars every month for it. The stipend is just enough for living if u have a family, no extra money to buy anything.
