Guys (and ladies), There are plenty of posts around on this website on which resources students used to do SO well on the boards. But just as important, if not more, is exactly how they studied. I think at the end of the day, most students use the same resources with very little variation. So why do some students score 180, others 210, and some 260? The obvious answer is the volume of information that the students w/ 260 know along w/ test taking skills. There's plenty of resources around the net that teach you how to improve your test taking skills, but nearly not enough that really teach you how exactly to remember the amount of information a med student has to grasp. So, let's use this opportunity to help each other out and share our techniques. Lately, the technique that I've been using is making flow charts out of everything. I don't think its helping me remember voluminous information, but conceptually it definitely helps. When it comes to harder to memorize concepts, I'd usually read a subtopic, close the book, repeat it...read couple other subtopics and then say out loudly the entire topic w/o looking at the book So, share your ideas. I know most posters on this board will appreciate it. I know, I will.... P.S. - Of course, it is implied that what works for one doesn't work for everyone, but please feel free to share any and all ideas.

Or do you usually read a particular section and then read it again? I hope that 90+ clubbers would chime in and give us recommendations

My method is nothing new but I'll share it anyway. I listen to DVDs slowly as I silmutaneously follow the material in notes and make my additions to the notes from the lecture. Then if there are questions available after the chapter, I would do those, which helps greatly. Unfortunately, not all LN have that. Usually I do 1 subject at the time.

RayBerg, I've got your pm. I guess I am not working hard on memorization right now since I am in my first read, but more on understanding concepts. However, I believe that first encounter with the material can help us with memorization greatly if it's done right. So, I try to reinforce concepts in my memory by doing questions right after each chapter. Ideally, if I had more time, I would re-tell just read chapter and only then do the questions. I think what you are doing - making charts is great too. There is only so much we can do to memorize the material outside of the medschool environment. It's working on understanding concepts and applying it to practice by making tables/charts, doing questions, re-telling material to yourself. This is a good thread, pple let's keep it going!

Here are some notes I found during reading a different post as I was looking for way how to prepare for the exam and I still find an inspiration in them. 1.Repetition makes memories. Each instance of recall produces a new memory trace, linking it to another moment of life and increasing the chance for recall in the future. 2.The key is not how long you spend studying , but Being efficient, getting the most out of the time. 3.Study methods - pose questions - be sure to make up questions while you study. - use graphs and charts - practice paraphrasing- if you can say it in your own words, then you really know it. - crating a summary notes - plan your study time - avoid cramming ,plan to re-review key material on a regular basis. Active learning is the best - doing practice questions - remember, you only have time to read each question once. Learn to make that time reading as efficient as possible. -be organized- set up an organized study schedule and adhere to it. Schedule regular breaks and keep them. Stick to your schedule. 4.DONT COMPARE THE AMT OF HARD WORK WITH THE OUTCOME. JUST TRY TO GET THE BEST OUT OF YOURSELF. 5.so whenever ever u come across any mcq, dont just look out for the ans in case u have no idea about the topic. try to think something, try to fit in some logic, try to rule out the options, etc ........ and believe me u will be able to get many mcqs right in the end JUST LIKE THAT! 6.so realize one thing U ARE NEVER GONNA BE A MASTER OF EVERY SUBJECT OR TOPIC. U ARE NEVER GONNA BE ABLE TO SOLVE 'ALL' THE MCQS. u are always gonna come across alien mcqs no matter how much u know. so give up the greed of knowing any subject absolutely thoroughly........ thats never gonna happen. 7.when u are finished with one subject , u will have a confidence greater than alexander-the great ........ BUT IT WONT LAST !!!! ur clarity about the subject will fade with time. (esp. applies to people like me who have memory < 256 MB !!!!!). so the imp thing is revision..... WILL HAVE TO READ EACH SUBJECT MORE THAN ONCE AT ALL COST.

Another tip that I came across- " I took a set of 4-6 pages, gave a radip reading of the whole set. Afterwards, I took 1 page of the set and gave a slow reading of it, 1 or 2 times, and finally, I made a summary of that page "blindfolded" before I moved to the next page. Once you finish that set, grab another 4-6 pages and continue. It can take you between 15 to 40 minutes per page depending on the complexity of the material (that's why you will need tons of time). The mnemonics will come to your head when needed. "
