A blood sample from a patient with polycythemia vera is sent for
complete blood count. Which of the following blood components is most
likely to be reported within normal limits?
A. Lymphocytes
B. Neutrophils
C. Platelets
D. Red blood cells
E. White blood cells

The answer is "A" Lymphocytes. Polycythemia vera is characterized by an increase in erythrocytes along with moderate increases in granulocytes (including neutrophiles) and platelets. Most important is whether or not there is an decrease in EPO. This decrease seperates primary from secondary polycythemia.
