A 9-year-old girl has pain and swelling of the elbows and knees and a fever for 1 month. On physical examination, her temperature is 38C. There is decreased range of motion at the elbows and knees, with joint swelling and warmth. Laboratory studies show hemoglobin of 13.4 g/dL, hematocrit 40.3%, platelet count 288,200/cc, and WBC count 12,560/cc.
