Is there anybody on this forum applying for anesthesiology? Can You give me an idea on how competitive it is for IMG? After IM, of course, anesthesiology is an area of great interest for me, so I thought of applying for a few programs. While browsing through Freida, however, I noticed that the programs vary: some of them offer 4 years of thraining, some-3, apply as PG1, some-3, apply as PG2. It's rather confusing. Can anybody clarify this for me?

It's much more competitive in comparison with IM. According to statistics, u have to get at least 10-12 i/ws to get into GAS

I browsed through several anesthesiology residency websites-all the residents seem to be local graduates, I didn't see even one IMG!!! Also, read somewhere that there's a shortage of anesthesiologists, and the situation is expected to worsen. However, I didn't get an impression that Anesthesiology is particularly IMG-friendly!!! or offers more positions compared to previous years to replace the shortase of staff...

Since there's only one response to my question I assume that there are no other applicants for anestesiology this year???

congrats on your interviews.....on my end i am an avg candidate, i applied to 40 programs both large and small programs. i have been rejected from 3 (wayne, u of cinn and dartmouth) I have recieved about 6 letters saying they recieved my applications. I spoke to my old anesthesia doc that i rotated under last year....his advice to me was to be patient. thats right now a majority of the students gettin interview....are basically stand outs. that a student like me is on the bubble and will here back hopefully late oct/nov, after the deans letter goes out. i dont know if that they invite in waves or rounds, but i haven't heard anything in a week....its makin me totally freaked out. my assumption is that cause i haven't heard i'm still bein considered. on the 15th i will email reguarding my status(cause some programs don't send rejections) i really dont know what to do right now...i have gotten iv from transitional and prelim Im programs but nothing from anesthesia. I am a img...mid 80's on step 1/2/3, pass cs, 1 year us exp(observership), 2 lor from anesthesia. All i know is htat i'm givin it a shot. If anyone can advice people like me then that would be great, cause silence sucks.....hearing either way would be great, maybe its just early and i'm over reacting. not to freak out either but this is a interesting site: http://forums.gasforums.net/showthread.php?t=3182...

Hi, Lillyny! I'm aware of what's going on among the local graduates... But if I think of it all the time I'll eat myself up (I'm already eating myself up!). So let's all pretend that we didn't check out the website and continue praying that we'll meet a nice PD who will be impressed enough by our credentials to invite us for interview. We have to hope, otherwise...

OK, congratulations to the person with 10 interviews! I don't know why s/he said s/he doesn't want to freak us out... but anyways anybody is entitled to follow his or her dreams, and a lot of things are possible with very hard work and perseverence. I know it sounds like a slogan, but it's the way I think. Sometimes it might take a while until you get where you want, but if you really want to get there, you find a way! Numbers are very relevant, but also extremely relative, as in the scores, the number of years since graduation, and stuff. So people don't get discouraged, by anybody or anything, just go for what you want! Best of luck to all of us! A.

How many categorical and advanced Anesthesia programs and how many prelim. IM or Surg. programs have you guys applied to? Have you applied for both categorical and advanced positions in same hospital?
