2 weeks have passed since I flied to the US and I feel very depressed. Can't fit in with any friends and I miss home already. If someone can tell me that this is going finally to pay off I will br really happy I am applying to surgery (targeting a prematch for a preliminary position in the tristate area plus MI) *I have taken Step 2 ck and got 246/99 *I have a citizenship because I was born in the states but I didn't live there. so my english is somewhat cracked. *will take step 1 24oct and step cs 16 nov * no USCE of any kind So I have 2 questions. 1st am I going to have what I want 2nd when do programs start to offer prematchs

tough to get what you want. i dont know much about surgery match, since applied only to IM. however, step 1 by ocy 24 sounds very late to me. I would tend to think slim chance in match, but heard there are significant numbers of positions for prelim surgery in scramble. good luck. ngt.

Hello mohelgamal, I dont know anything about surgery residency to begin with. But I still think that u have a decent chance mainly because of two positive points.Ur step2 score and also ur Citizenship. So have patience and wait.In the meanwhile try and study for step1.Oct 24 th is not far away. About prematch, programs offer them when u go for the interview. If they are very much impressed with you they will offer a prematch. Good Luck

Depressed in only two weeksa? Then maybe you should head home. How are you going to take care of patients if you move here for residency? Sorry, but it's very important that you are going to be happy and only you can tell yourself that. If there is any hesitation, you need to return home, rethink your plan about doing surgery in the USA. Why am I being mean on this one? We had a resident; many, many years ago - came over, felt depressed, missed home and family. He killed himself. The PD and I had to deal with police, government officials, family phone calls, and the worse? Arrangments to return the body home. (Then there were phone calls from applicants who learned that we had an opening in the program, but that's a story better told over pisco sours) You need to be happy. Do what is best for you. PLEASE! Do what is best for you. Good luck with a hard decision.

Thanks to every one who responded I am not depressed because I miss home, not at all actually I am more bored than depressed . I am bored because of the situation of uncertinity, I have toured several hospitals and emailed others, every one is saying that they don't give observerships. or give me answers like leave your email and we will contact you in case something comes up(which I know itwon't) on the other hand I find that most of good programs require USCE and at least 3 LOR. SO HOW CAN I GET LORS IF YOU DON"T GIVE ME THE CHANCE TO GET INTO ANY HOSPITAL. the main cause of my depression is that I was talking to one guy who got surgery at university of pennsylavinia, he is an IMG and with USMLE Score of mid 80s. but they took him because he has several USCE AND Research chances. also I have been reading the forums here and found that most guys who got prematchs to great places were known to PDs by there observerships not by there scores, I am now wondering if all my study and great score will turn out to be useless because I didn't get to know any PDs. or will I find who appreciate what I can be if I was given the chance. Anyway I am much less depressed now because although I didn't get to have any friends around. but I got to know some people. yet My step1 is in 3 weeks and I did nbme 1 and got 530 (91). yet I feel to bored to study and can't force myself to study as I should. anyway thanks again for your concern

man forget about everything and concentrate on you step1. You are bit late. You have a fantastic score in step2. Dont worry about US clinical experience, this is diverting your attention. You will get a program. Try to get earlier date from CS as soon as you give your step1 because the result will come late. The day you given step1, start looking for observership. Dont screw you step1 score because of usce. Beleive me you will get a match, hopefully this year but for-sure next year. Dont come to this forum till you have taken step1. My advice!

my 8 cents. these are meant to be useful. 1. this process is long, hard and will teach you endurance and perseverence. you cant be asking about pay-off two weeks into being in US. this aint started yet. 2. write your ps. 3. set-up your career goals. 4. read it 10 times 5. ask yourself : what are you doing NOW to pursue these goals? 6. if you need USCE, go find it. if you need research, go and do it. if you need to wait for a year, then wait for a year and reapply next year. 7. avoid the misconception that just studyng for an exam will open you the door to the best university programs in US in one of the most competitive field such as surgery. 8.persevere and you will have a chance. no guarantees of success, but very likely.

Alas, no. But if alcohol is involved, I usually know about it.

Molly is doing well, she misses your notes. I think she's developing a crush. But she is preparing for her last camping trip of the season and keeping busy.
