I was wondering if anyone can make sense of the fact that it is possible for pts with pancreatitis to present with hypertriglyceridemia. I'm asking this because I remembering reading somewhere that there was a tendency for pts to exhibit a false hypotriglyceridemia in pancreatitis... the reason for which is also unknown to me...

hypertryglyceridemia leads to pancreatitis... not the other way around!

True, but it's a very rare cause associated almost always with a genetic defect.... what about possible causes for false hypotriglyceridemia in usch circumstances?

well lipase level will be elevated in pancreatitis [very specific for tht], so it will digest the triglycerides present in the serum! thus decreasing its level!

but how can hypertryglyceridemia lead to pancreatitis, whtz the mechanism of tht?

Yes extreme elevation of TG more than 1000mg/dl can lead to acute pancreatitis

Mechanism is unknown, ssrpk. Occurs almost always associated with the rare Hyperlipidemia V if I remember correctly (so it takes sky-high hypertriglyceridemia like star1 pointed out), and they're not sure if it's the genetic defect that causes both hypertriglyceridemia and pancreatitis, or causes hypertriglyceridemia which in turn is responsible for pancreatitis...
