After eating, a 40-year-old woman has a vague feeling of discomfort in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. Ultrasonography discloses several small calculi, believed to be cholesterol gallstones, in the gallbladder. She begins oral therapy with ursodeoxycholic acid. Which of the following is the best rationale for this treatment?

A. Addition of bilirubin to the bile
B. Decrease in the concentration of bile acids
C. Decrease in the ratio of cholesterol to bile acids
D. Increase in the ability of the gallbladder to concentrate bile
E. Increase in the concentration of lecithin in bile

C.

"works by reducing the amount of cholesterol released by the liver into bile and by slowly dispersing the cholesterol, so breaking up the stones."

yes ur right, but it also increases bile acid concentration. so how can we rule out E?

As far as i remember, Lecithin is the same thing as Phosphatidylcoline (Surfactant)

Though the drug might increase the concentration of bile acid, i don't think it's done by specifically increasing the concentration of Lecithin in bile.

hmm...i just found out from my handy First Aid that Lecithin is also found in BILE!!! Who knew.. haha

In either case, i believe answer E. is wrong because that's not how the drug works...?

Yes, it's C

The drug increases level of bile acids, not lecithin!
