Kaplan Qbank USMLE

guys ive been getting similar qs asked by a lot of u about the utility of kaplan dvds. here r the common points i frequently came across.
  • when should lecture note be done? before or after the dvds

u can do them simulatneoulsy. most of the notes follow the dvds. immuno and neuroanatomy dont follow it, but kaplan immuno is very simple. some ppl find it a wats eof time, but it did help my understanding. i just listened to it and jotted down the stuff sepaarately.

neuroanatomy ( brainstem and spinal cord)..the order is different buty thats to promote understanding. i thinkimng listening to the dvd first wud me more helpful, coz ur likely to retain less if uu were to read the book on your own. there is sufficient time while the guy is teaching to jot down pointers.
  • dvds take long. do all of tehm have to be done?

these r the ones u NEED to do

Behavorial science

Biochemistry

these wud be important but not essential....

neuroanatomy--> brainstem and spinal cord sections

physiology--the guy follows word to word from the book but somehow u retain more,

the notes 4 these hardly need additions from the dvds, though for biochem, id advise u to write some stuff down in the order taught ( for energy metabolism) as it helps

the remaining are ur choice.

do the patho slide review ( the last two lectures)

if u cant identify the slides, u can go through selected chapters..eg renal and hematology coz the guy explains eg Electron micrographs for kidneys well. i was tested pretty heavily on histopath so i didnt regert doingthe patho videos.

lowest priority

pharma.

rest--ull have to decide accoring to how much u found the videos helpful. one good judge is trying to read teh notes and thinking over wahat u retained, then going over the video and assessing how much u understood. everybody's style is different. i liked the dvds and did all, even immuno. the only ones i didnt complete was pharma. the remaining i dint find a waste of time.

  • REMEMBER

get a dvd playing software which plays at a higher play speed. u cam listen to the physio ones at speed 1.5 or 2. similarly if u feel a concepts too dragging, increase the play speed. power dvd was helpful. i think asus dvd has the feature too. windows player is varible. some versions show the feature, but dont allow u to use them in the dvds themselves.

id like to emphaisze that u should INDIVIDUALIZE ur studying pattern. if u think some style suits ur pattern of studing, adopt that one. i knew ppl who read the notes right before the dvds, or others who listened and then read them..some just listened to the dvds only ( eg for genetics). ppl in the forum even wrote the whole thing out of the videos...( but that is a bit time consuming)

BIOCHEM and BEHAVORIAL science are a must. do not omit them at any cost. the rest depends on how useful u think the dvds are.

Good luck

  • is there a site to download them

i doubt it. ebven if there was they r HUGE files, in gbs. dvds are an investment worth making

  • where do we get them from

from the net i guess if they r not available in ur country. just ask around the forum for advise about a good rep source. ive heard that ebay and usmlestep.com offers bargians but i really dont know.
  • one thing..WEBprep..its is a distillate of the videos on real player and has text with it too. howevere it duz not give u the option to play at a higher speed, and duz not cover the course as comprehensively as the dvds. i liked it, but i cant comment on wether its adequate or not.

thanx study_ing. very useful tips. i agree that study patterns are individualised, i somehow liked the pharma lec, though many may not agree. i played it at higher speed which is very useful.

physio lectures are verrry slow, i hope p499 finished listening to them.

here is my problem, i dont have beh science last few lectures. can somebody help??
