Pathophysiology behind the use of laser surgery for the removal of tattoo on the skin?

  #2

My educated guess is that we laser targets only the colored area of the skin & spares the normal skin sorrounding the tattoo. Pulsed lasers coressponding to the wavelength of the colour of the tatoo is used. This is my wild wild guess...so dont take it seriously!!

I think it should be the same reason we use laser for melasma or even in hair removal, in all of them the laser rays target the pigments, that's why in hair removal laser you ask the pt to shave the area before laser, because otherwise the pigments of hair will act like a screen, the hair will burn and the rays won't go further into the skin to reach follicles. I am not sure about exact details though. But of course it all depends on the wave lenght(I mean the wave lenght dtermines the specific target).
