Hi shadia,
A prel position is the spot offered ONLY FOR ONE year. After that you must look for the second year or get into the match looking a categorical position which means your have been accepted through the entire specialty lengt.
Some applicants use this preliminary just before entering some fellowship which might request you 1 year of internal medicine or general surgery.
Others get into this spots coz its harder to get a categorical position and try next year again.
Most IMGs with out USCE increase their chances of getting a categorical position by appliying to a preliminary posit before.
