Hi,
This may be a stupid question but I have searched everywhere on this site and found no concrete answer. I am a canadian who is an IMG. I will be starting my clinical clerkships in the US. My question is, if I am lucky enough to get a residency in the US and complete it, will I be able to go back to Canada to practice? I plan to try for a surgery residency or radiology residency. Does anyone know the answer to my question? Thanks for your help.

you can practice as long as your US residency in recognized. When you apply for J1 visa. You have to take a Statement of need from your province of residence. For that you have to have Evaluation exam and preferably QE1 passed. I am surprised you are seeking this information so late. If you have not passed EE then you have to do it as soon as possible. Otherwise you have to go back to your country of origin if any to apply from there with their statement of need. This is all if you need J1.

I think whichever country you get statement of need you have to go after residency to work for two years before coming to US for fellowship.

Hi Rana Khan,
I have not heard of this Evaluation exam or QE1. I haven't started my clinical assignment yet but will be within the next month. I am waiting for paperwork that my school is sending me to take to the US consulate for my time in the US. When and who do I contact about this statement of need and evalutation exam? This is all new information to me and any help would be really appreciated. Thanks again.

are you graduating from Canadian medical school?

I think this will answer all your questions.

No, I am a Canadian that will graduate form a Caribbean Medical School. I will be startingmy clinical clerkships in the US. I hope to get a residency in the US since it is too tough to try in Canada. But after residency I would like to return to Canada to practice. Would I have to complete more exams to return to Canada to practice?
