PCP blocks NMDA receptors. And Glutamate action on NMDA receptor can cause psychosis. So why does when PCP is given a person becomes more psychotic and violent(when it is blocking NMDA receptor thus blocking the action of Glutamate)? Can someone plz explain this. I'm confused

Hi it is not just Glutamate that causes psychosis, but also serotonin and dopamine are important in generating many symptoms in psychosis like hallucination, and delirium... did u notice that mesocortical-mesolimbic pathway that contain dopamine has mood and metation which can be inhibited in schizophrenia to relief hallucinations. plz add if u want

What I don't get is how does the blocking of NMDA receptors by PCP can cause the person to become psychotic and violent. Wat I understand is that glutamate causes increased excitation of neurons by binding to NMDA receptors and if the PCP blocks glutamate from binding to NMDA receptors then that should decrease excitation thus not causes psychosis. But on the contrary, when an individual takes PCP, it causes increase in excitation. Can someone plz explain that? thanks
