We will accept only applications submitted through ERAS for PGY1 residency positions. Our deadline for accepting applications is Wednesday, January 3. In addition to the standard ERAS application, Foreign Medical School Graduates are required to have the documents listed below to be eligible for consideration for an interview:

*ECFMG Certification -- must be complete and verified to be considered for interview invitation

*current approved Medical Board of California Postgraduate Training Authorization letter - to be considered for an interview (http://www.medbd.ca.gov/))

*USMLE Transcript --we look for a first time pass on each USMLE or Comlex exam, the higher the score the better chance of an invitation to interview

*Interviewees must be eligible for U.S. employment: must be a US citizen, possess an ECFMG sponsored J-1 Visa, or have Permanent Resident Status and authorization for employment to begin residency with UCSF Fresno. UCSF requires J-1 visa for residency positions. US clinical experience is preferred.

In all, we review the application in its entirety. We do not accept paper applications. All applications are accepted through ERAS. Deadline for applications is 12/15/2006. All our residents are IMGs so that is not an issue. We sponsor H1 and J1 visas. Your USMLE Step 2 score is at the edge of what we will consider but your USMLE Step 3 score is quite good. I suggest that you apply and then e-mail me personally to remind me and I will look at your application myself.

The information below explains our admission policy and criteria if you decide to apply for a residency position for the upcoming year (2007-2008). I think it will answer almost all your questions. If not, send me another E-mail for further information.

For further details on our program such as salaries, etc., please check the AMA's FREIDA site which has detailed information. You can reach FREIDA at the following WEB address:

www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.html <>

You can also reach FREIDA via the AMA's WEB site www.ama-assn.org <>

Move your cursor over the blue box in the upper left corner labeled "Physicians" then pick "Medical Education" from the drop down list and then pick "FREIDA on-line" from the next list that appears.

ALL applications MUST be made via ERAS (see one of the paragraphs below for details).

We do not offer clerkships, observerships, or externships as we focus our teaching program exclusively on our residents.

We will start accepting applications for PGY1 positions in our categorical Internal Medicine residency training program for the academic year 2007-2008 as soon as ERAS starts accepting applications (around 8/15/06). We will be taking 25 PGY1 residents. Our program is not pyramidal; we have positions for all accepted residents for a full 3 years of training. We do not offer any preliminary or transitional positions. All our residency positions are categorical and come with the clear understanding that you are committing yourself to complete, in our program, the full three years of residency training required for Internal Medicine in order to be eligible to take the ABIM board exam.

About 25-35% of our graduating residents go on to fellowship programs either here (Cardiology is a joint fellowship with our affiliated medical school SUNY-Downstate, Pulmonary, or GI) or at outside institutions.

The current RRC/ACGME accreditation status of our Internal Medicine residency training program is "Continuing Full Accreditation" which is the RRC's highest rating.

We screen our applicants using their USMLE Parts 1 and 2 scores and then consider for interview only those applicants with scores >= 85 on their first exam attempts. However, we cannot interview all candidates who meet these criteria because we receive a large number of qualified applications. You should not apply to our program if you have failed either the USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 exams because your application will not be considered.

You can apply even if you have taken only one (or even neither) of the USMLE exams as long as you take the missing USMLE exam(s) in a timely fashion. However, we do not review applications until we receive both your USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 scores. Thus, to be interviewed in time for the NRMP match, you would probably have to complete the USMLE Step 1 and 2 exams by mid-December so the we receive the results in early to mid-January and then if you meet our criteria, we can schedule an interview before we (and you) have to submit our match lists (ROLIC) in mid to late February. On the positive side, we receive these scores in a timely fashion directly from the ECFMG/NBME via ERAS usually within 3-5 weeks after you take the test. Further, since we take residents both in the match and out of the match (both before and after the match), we can take candidates right up to June 30th (depending on their visa status) to start in our residency program on July 1st.

Our residents are primarily international medical graduates and we take both men and women without regard to sex, race, or national origin. We do not use the year of an applicant's graduation from medical school in our admission criteria; some of our residents are 50 or older. Significant research experience, published papers, and advanced degrees (Masters or PhD) are weighted positively but are not required for application to our program. We do not require US medical experience but a working knowledge of spoken English is necessary. We have no requirement for a minimum TOEFL score; however, we evaluate your spoken English as part of the interview process.

The interview plays a major role in the admission process. Interviews are conducted by two Attending Physicians or by an Attending Physician and a 4th year Chief Resident. All applications and interviews are discussed by our Medical-Education Committee which makes the final decision as to whether to rank an applicant for the NRMP match (or accept an applicant pre-match or post-match).

We plan to start interviewing in September or October 2006 and will continue to interview through the Fall and Winter. We are looking primarily for applicants with permanent residency ("green card," work authorization, or US citizenship). However, we do take and sponsor significant numbers of applicants for H1 visas. We also sponsor a few applicants for J1 visas on a case-by-case basis. We will be offering positions both pre-match and through the NRMP (the match). The deadline for applications for candidates to be considered for the NRMP match is two weeks before the deadline for submission of your NRMP Ranked Order List. However, the sooner you put in your application, the better the chance you have of being interviewed. Also, we tend to interview candidates as their ERAS applications are completed; thus, the earlier you apply, the sooner you get an interview and the better your chance of acceptance. Lastly, if your application does not reach us in time for us to schedule an interview before the NRMP match deadline for submitting ranked lists, we will not be able to rank you for the NRMP match. Thus, the sooner you apply, the better!

If you are interested in applying to Interfaith for residency, you MUST apply via ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System) as this enables us to get all the information we need to screen your application. Please note that USMLE transcripts are REQUIRED in order for your ERAS application to be reviewed. USMLE transcripts can be ordered from the NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners) who will send the transcript to ERAS who then sends it to us as part of your ERAS application. Also, you should submit at least three recommendation letters with your application. If possible, these letters should include letters from the Chairman of the Department of Medicine of your medical school and the Dean of your medical school.

ERAS is sponsored by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) and you can get information on ERAS at their WEB site (www.aamc.org). The standard ERAS application contains all the written information we need when it includes recommendation letters, your personal statement, and your USMLE and ECFMG transcripts.

You do not need an ECFMG certificate at the time of application but you do need a valid ECFMG certificate in order to either (1) start working as a resident in the hospital or (2) enter the NRMP match. [Note: If NRMP receives notification from the ECFMG that you have completed your exam requirements for certification by the rank order list deadline, you will be included in the Match. However, if you have not received ECFMG certification by the rank order list deadline, NRMP will withdraw you from the Match.] The sooner you take and pass your USMLE Step 3 test, the better. I recommend that you take Step 3 as soon as possible. Once you match (because you need an institution to sponsor you), you can apply for an H-1B visa without having passed the USMLE Step 3 exam but you can not actually receive the visa until you pass the exam. Further, for a fee of $1,000 paid to the US government, you can have your application handled in an expedited fashion (within 2-3 weeks). This year, everyone applying for an H-1B visa after the NRMP match will have to apply for their H-1B visa via this expedited pathway in order to ensure receiving their visa before 7/1/07 and thus be able to start their residency on time.

Opportunities exist for clinical research with the faculty members particularly in the PGY3 year and are strongly encouraged. We have access to all patient information and to computer software that covers a wide range of statistical procedures used to analyze clinical data.

You can apply (via ERAS) and we will review your application as soon as we receive it.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your interest in the Southern California Kaiser Permanente Residency and Fellowship Programs. Kaiser Permanente has provided excellent medical training to thousands of medical students for over 50 years. Our objective is to educate and mentor medical students to develop the skills necessary to become accomplished and compassionate physicians.

The Kaiser residency and fellowship programs are very competitive and files are reviewed independently as well as comparative to the rest of the applicant pool. We accept and review files of all qualified applicants for our residency program as well as those on educational visas. However, we are not able to pre-screen applicants by e-mail or phone to determine whether they qualify for our program.

Residency applications can be submitted electronically through ERAS starting September 1, 2006. Please check our website for details on which method to use.

The deadline to apply to most programs is Jan. 1st, however we may fill our interview slots before that date and it is best to apply as early as possible. A detailed description of the curriculum as well as program application guidelines is available on our website at http://residency.kp.org/scal.

Thank you for your interest in our internal medicine residency program. Due to the volume of e-mails received we are unable to respond to specific individual questions. Here are answers to most frequently asked questions. We do not have any openings for 2006. Due to recent volume, we are not currently accepting requests for externships or observerships. We accept all applications through ERAS. Scores of 80 and above and U.S. clinical experience are preferred. J1 and H1-b candidates will be considered as long as they meet the requirement for their visa of choice at the time the Match list is submitted. We are not currently subject to the cap. We have no restrictions on length of time since graduation, but we will continue to scrutinize the CV concerning what has been undertaken in the interim. Applicants without U.S. clinical experience, but with high scores and advanced degrees will be considered. Our web site is www.cantonmedicine.org and the preferred e-mail address is cantonmedicine@aultman.com. Again, thanks for your interest.

· We often receive inquiries from foreign medical graduates about their eligibility. You must apply via ERAS, and the institution will sponsor J-1, F-1, H-1B, TN, and EAC visas. All fees are paid by prospective applicants; the only fee that CHS will cover is the $1000 fee required by the INS for processing an H1-B visa. All applicants must already have work authorizations approved before starting. You also must have completed a Fifth Pathway Program at an LCME accredited facility and/or be ECFMG certified before you can apply. Our limit of graduation year is 2 years.

Thank you for your interest in our program. Please apply through the ERAS system beginning September 1, 2006.

We look for successful passage of steps 1 & 2, with a minimum score average of 210, ECFMG certification, and accept applications only through ERAS. We do honor H-1 and J-1 VISAS and if you plan on an H-1, you must pass Step 3, ideally by the time of your interview.

For you to be considered for a pre-match offer you must be ECFMG certified; and if you insist on an H1 visa, you must have taken, passed and have your Step 3 result by the time of your interview. If you will consider taking a J1 visa if you should fail the Step 3, you may also be given a pre-match offer. Some pre-match offers are given the day of the interview, some later.

Early applications get preferential treatment. Our application deadline is 12/01/06 and we anticipate 13 categorical and 2 preliminary positions. We are 99% IMG.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education (MSGME). Please review the information below regarding applying for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Positions

There are 72 PGY-1 (intern) internal medicine positions each year available through the NRMP: 45 categorical (3-year) positions, 3 clinical investigator (research track) positions, and 24 preliminary (1-year) positions. In addition, approximately two to four PGY2 positions are available each year for applicants with 1 year of accredited US training or with at least three years of non-US internal medicine residency training. For more information, see our electronic brochure at: http://www.mayo.edu/int-med/res-program/resid-mai....

Application Process

All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) which, is open September through February. Paper applications or supplemental materials will not be accepted. ERAS web site: http://www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm

MSGME sponsors International Medical Graduates (IMGs) on J-1 or Permanent Immigrant ("green card") visas. ECFMG certification must be obtained prior to submitting your Rank Order List. ECFMG and CSA web site: http://www.ecfmg.org/index.html#Top.

All appointments are made through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Appointments are very competitive. NRMP web site: http://www.nrmp.org/about_nrmp/index.html.

Selection Criteria

All applicants are required to provide a USMLE transcript in the ERAS application in order to be considered for interview. While we have no minimum requirement for USMLE score, performance on steps 1 and 2 is evaluated carefully, and is one of the most important criteria used to evaluate an applicant. Most candidates selected to interview have a score of 220 or better. The score on step 2 (clinical) is considered to be more predictive of future clinical performance than step 1 (basic science). USMLE web site: http://www.usmle.org/.

Mayo is a participant in the NRMP match, therefore, we must require that all of our candidates be able to sit for the Step 2 CK and CS PRIOR to December 31st, 2006 in order to be considered for a position at Mayo for 2007.

Additional criteria used in selection for interview:

Class rank at graduation (or other medical school awards)

The reputation of the medical school

The quality and duration of residency training following graduation, and honors/awards during residency

Language and communication skills

Clinical letters of recommendation and the letter from the Dean of the medical school.

Research experience, particularly publications and presentations

Invitations for Interview

Each year the internal medicine residency program at MSGME receives far more applications from qualified applicants than positions available. Because of the large number of applications received, we can not provide a "status report" to applicants regarding their application, selection for interview, etc. Nor are we able to provide individual counseling or rationale for interview selection decisions. Only those applicants selected to interview will be contacted (by e-mail and by first class mail). Applicants who receive no invitation by January 15 should assume that their applications were not deemed competitive by the selection committee.
