DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE NORWALK HOSPITAL MEMORANDUM TO: International Applicants for Internal Medicine Residency Training FROM: Janet Johnson Residency Registrar RE: Information and Requirements for Applications for Training in 2007 We require that you have scores of 85 or better on both Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE. An ECFMG certificate is required to enter a U.S. residency. Therefore, the CSA, which is required for ECFMG certification, is mandatory unless you have a certificate which was issued before that requirement was added. Though not absolutely required, we do check for U.S. experience, and it is definitely to your advantage. The deadline for applications is December 1, 2006. Regarding year of graduation, we do not have a ruling, but want to know what you have been doing since graduation. We do have international physicians in our housestaff. We do sponsor J-1 visas. In regard to H-1 visas, we do sponsor those on occasion, but that would be determined with the Residency Program Director, at the time of the interview. We prefer that all requirements for the H-1 visa be completed before we sponsor such a visa, i.e. you should plan to take the Step 3 exam by the end of 2006 or early in 2007. If you take the Step III exam in early 2007, you should anticipate using the expedited process which takes only two weeks. We are participating in the ERAS program, and will not accept paper applications. To obtain applications and information on that program, write ECFMG-ERAS Program, Box 13467, Philadelphia, PA 19104-3467, U.S.A., or go to the ECFMG/ERAS web site at: www.ecfmg.org/erasinfo.htm. If you wish further information about the program, you can find it at http://www.norwalkhealth.org Pamela Charney, M.D., F.A.C.P. 1. We do accept IMGs - currently 17 out of our 21 residents are IMGs. 2. This hospital is unable to sponsor any type of immigration visa, but we do accept the ECFMG-sponsored J1. 3. Your scores are fine, but we do require that you have graduated within 3 years prior to applying - it is hard to say if you would be considered or not until we can see the quality of all 2007 applicants applying through ERAS. Please visit our website (www.sjresidencies.com) after August so you can review all our 2007 requirements. San Joaquin General Hospital Program

May 9, 2006 Thank you so much for inquiring about The Georgetown University Hospital/Washington Hospital Center Internal Medicine Residency Program. We only accept applications through ERAS. Although we have no official USMLE score cut off, applicants should generally have passed on their first attempts, and higher scores are obviously more competitive. Our extensive experience tells us that those who have graduated from medical school within the prior 4 years and have had some experience with the US health care system are most likely to succeed in our program. We sponsor both J1 and H1b visas. Further details can be discussed at the time of interview. Given the obligations we have to medical students from the DC metropolitan area, we regret that we are unable to offer externships/observerships to international graduates prior to the match. After the match, we only offer such training opportunities to candidates who have matched with our program. We wish you the best of luck in your endeavors. To Whom It May Concern: Thank you for your interest in the Department of Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. I understand that you would like some information about our training program, especially starting at the PGY1 level. Complete information and our brochure is available at www.harbor-ucla.org/medicine. Here is additional information that may be useful: 1. As of the 2006-2007 academic year, all of our 55 positions are filled by US Medical School graduates. 51 positions are Categorical Medicine (PGY1-PGY3) and 4 positions are Preliminary Medicine PGY1. 2. For the application process, we use ERAS exclusively for application material and all of our positions are filled through the NRMP Residency Match. Information about both of these can be found at the AAMC website: www.aamc.org 3. The deadline for applications for the 2007 academic year (PGY1 starting June 24, 2007) is December 15, 2006 through ERAS. Our expectations for the application are similar to other programs, requiring 3 letters of recommendation (1 from the Chair of the Department of Medicine), the Dean's Letter or equivalent, Personal Statement, Common Application Form, USMLE Transcript or equivalent, and ECGME Certificate, if applicable. More information can be found in the brochure. 4. We cannot give any specific guidance about the likelihood of acceptance or an interview. In the past, we have granted interviews to about 25% of applicants and those accepted usually have above average USMLE scores. You must make your decision based on the information here and in the brochure and website. 5. If you are a currently enrolled medical student, you may be interested in a rotation at Harbor-UCLA. Information can be found on the Department of Medicine website, but all applications are submitted through the UCLA School of Medicine. If you have already graduated from medical school, I regret that we have no provisions for "observerships" or other similar activities. 6. We only rarely have positions available at the PGY2 or PGY3 level. 7. While our hospital is part of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, taking care of a largely medically-indigent population in Southern LA County, the training program and its full time faculty are under the aegis of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. We have a proportionate share of UCLA Medical Students and the teaching and patient care are supervised closely by faculty attending physicians. Thank you again for your interest. Best wishes, Darryl Y. Sue, M.D. Program Director Department of Medicine Harbor-UCLA Medical Center
