I know it easy for others to say "don't feel bad" when it is not them. However, I was completely prepared for failure and surprised when I passed. The block of exams from August 3 - on were badly written. I would look at your weaknesses focus on those and go from there. Looking back on the exam (with no score at hand) I can honestly say that USMLE World was the reason I passed that exam. It was not because I got the exact same questions but it was the themes. So, hang in there. I would not make a lot of changes in what your studying. Let the USMLE report guide your next move. Tim P.S: I am wondering if others noticed this as well. I actually knew that I passes around 6:00pm last night when I happened to look at my applications to programs and saw that my ECFMG Status was updated from a previous transmission. In other words, it was revised. It can only be revised if you pass exams or meet ECFMG criteria. The ECFMG Status never has a "failed attempt." Nevertheless, I waited until 6:45am today for the OASIS to update. Just another trick for those in the match to see if you passed.

your mistake was in not reading the answers to the questions, even to those you got right. we need to know why we got an answer wrong so we can get similar questions right later. also we need to confirm why we got the answer right just to reinforce that our thought process is straight. i can only say 'better luck next time' cos that is the spirit of success,,,keep on trying till we reach the goal.

umsledep, When you try to register, you will see a screen with RED LETTER appears telling that you have passed this step or similiar exam. Remember if you do not look these word in panic and keep hitting "next" botton, you can still register as exceptions exist to retake the exam. I know quite a few people (including myself) were so nervous and didn't pay enough attention to the red letters.

According to what goes in the report, NO. It should not be updated if you failed. Failures and attempts go in the USMLE transcript. The only things that are put in your ECFMG Status is; Certified, Steps (taken and passed), and other identity issues. So, not sure what the deal is with your situation.

timd1313 wrote: The block of exams from August 3 - on were badly written. In what way were they poorly written? I'd think that they should have been better if anything, because that is when the "necessary modifications" were made to the item test pool. How do you know if they really differed from the other questions?

by score report date they that it is the date they have sent u out ur score report. u will be getting it in 3 to 4 days if u r in US.and later if u r abroad.ecfmg website updates all ur exams and retakes . don't get confused. just relax and calm down. i understand the trauma it must have brought.all those intense studying days and aiming for 99 then all of a sudden this happens.well now u can work on ur weaknesses and try to master them.i think reading each an every explanation of UW is important all ur correct and incorrect answers, because u never know what they r going to test on the exam.so gear up for a fresh start and give it ur bestest . u will do it superb this time.because hard work never goes in vain. so study study n study and u will acheive ur goals. GOOD LUCK

I dont know fellow CK takers. I guess just wait till the results come. I have no idea the workings of ECFMG. I do not know why OASIS turns over at different times in the night or why we take a computerized test and have to wait 6 weeks. I know everyone has good reasons but it stinks. As for the badly written exam. Yes it was badly written exam. I must have had 3-4 questions in at least 4 blocks that there were mispelled words or funny symbols that occur when a type script does not convert a certain format. I am tired of getting EKG's that you can barely read and radiology pictures that look like they were developed from a preschool class. I am not happy regardless of what my score will be the reason for messing with the exam pool. Call it paranoid but the reason given on USMLE site was unclear. Nevertheless, you jump through the hoops. Tim

I didn't read all the thread so forgive me if I sound redundant. 3 things could have gone wrong. 1) Knowledge of material 2) Analysis of questions 3) Nerves 1) Knowledge of material: Easily managed.....just study again and do it to learn not to pass the test. 2) Analysis of questions: Try to understand the question writer. Think like if YOU wrote the question. Read the answers well. Really comprehend the case in every aspect....not just sweep through in a haste. Nerves can play a major role here. Practice, practice, practice...manage your time, plan in advance. 3) Nerves: Visit the test center in advance. Know the surroundings (familiarization calms). Play the test day in your head several days in advance. Plan your breaks (bathroom break(s), lunch, and plain relaxation. Some people have irritable bowel sd. and that only works against te already wrecked nerves. You may try Loperamide. If you only get anxious (palpitations, feelings of impending failure of the test) you may try Propranolol. It will help relax and won't mess with alertness. I really don't encourage pharmacotherapy for te test. I had both conditions and managed on my own, without pills. Keep coming back to this forum! It helped me through my ordeal. Wonderful people who want to help the rest.
