Kaplan Qbank USMLE

dear study_ing, I have delayed my exam to gain sometime.here's what I have done: -kaplan lecture notes 3 times (last time march-june 2006)
-first aid -I;m finishing second read now.
-kaplan q bank, q book75%-I see you advice everyone to revise it, and I plan to do the same especially since I made lots of notes and marks.
-also solved robbins pathology questions-almost all and solving nms850q now, and already bought usmleworld.

how to make the best of the 2 months I have left? some say only solve questions. if I solve questions and read answers I only finish 150q a day at most.
I feel I could use a last reading of kaplan lecture notes.is this such a bad plan? should I divide the day in 70 q and explanations.reading the rest of the day?
I tend to read too slowly and thoroughly , I am afraid not to get far from the objective and frustrated again.

please advice me on a study plan.shaking head

well its a great plan..u have 2 months smiling face

i would suggest mixing it up...first tell me what ur studying pattern is like..do u make timetables and need to stick to them or r u adaptable?

i think u should concentrate on kaplan Qs..they r definitely worth it..i hav no idea about nms..but if u feel u dont have time, better revise ur kaplan qs, than do new ones.

DO revise ur lecture notes...when u'll sit thru the exam, u'll see loads of stuff u're familiar with coz of kaplan..post q bank, ur revision is gonna be great coz now ull READ a lot of stuf in kaplan which u previously didi not see...

however u should decide for urself how u wanna devote ur time to qs vs theory..i suggest do Qs first ..around 150 of them for eg of miscellaneous tests in order to get an idea of where u lag behind. then make a timetable of the relevant areas u need to focus on.

im a big fan of Behavorial sciences and biochem videos..if u get sick of ur routine, do try to listen to the former, esp the ethics section.

slow an dthorugh is good..im not a 10 revision person myself..and on a more optimistic note, 150 qs are not ONLY 150..its atleast 600 explanations revised a day!! i used to do les stahn that..

when ure doing questions try to figure out the approach to do them..eg take a untimed test of 25 in patho..aim for not only figuring out what theright answer is, but also what the other options are meant for..thats how i learnt histopathology..

similarly work out a plan for any given section..eg for fungi, think

clues id look for..1) location esp for histoplasma, coccidiodes...

2) morphology..if they talk about broad based buds, its??

that way u'll do very few qs initially, but u'll speed up exponnetially beforethe exam, and its helpful for step 2 as well

im sorry i have no experience with UW for step 1..from mine i can say for sure..MASTER kaplan ..

smiling face

hmm u surely didnt ask for this long and overbearing a post..but feel free to snore grin

i just remembered..please download the step 1 released items from kaplan and do the qs from the usmle cd before the exam..in fact do revise the cd a day before too, coz u may get a few replicas from there..

thank you so much for your generous reply, which answers many of my questions.
as a study pattern, i always plan, but i never do what i plan.but sometimes as i look back i only delay by a few days although at the moment it seems as a total failure.
i have wasted a few days these days, without any particular reason and i'm feeling so low.this is my biggest mistake-i take a day off or half a day off, quite often just because something got me mad. besides that i study too few hours a day , compared to what i used to do for my exams.

i hope , i hope i will be able to ask you questions abot my preparation here.
all the best to you!

i used to do that too..and i gave up on planning !! however i dont think its a good approach. ive realized my mistake is that when planning, i tend to be over ambitious..am a bit impatient too and cant judge how much i can accomplish in a given day..some days i work well..followed by lulls..perhaps we..err I ( since i dunno if u have the same issue) shud have more realistic goals..

the best thing ive learnt from step 1 is not to feel too bad abt my mistakes..its ok, its human..just stop thinking abt the time wasted and study NOW..evenif its 5 qs on the forum u solve, its still better than being angry at urself!!

good luck.

smiling face..and in case i delay answers to ur qs just PM ..

I am starting now my last revision-i think i will try to make a routine - first I;ll probably go through anatomy , neuranat, histo, embrio:
-first i;ll do first aid
-then i;ll revise q bank, q book and questions included in kaplan lecture notes
-then i;ll read the whole lecture notes again.(this is what i;m most afraid of-i hope i can do it fast enough, and i hope i won;t get burried and frustrated again)

stick to the plan.. i think its great! u didnt mention how much time do u have?

actually towards the end the ability to work increases exponentially..

one thing..do the usmle cd towards the end. a few qs get repeated from it.

good luck

thank you so much .is 1-1,5 month enough for going through first aid, kaplan questions ( 2nd time q bank, q book, lecture notes) and revising kaplan lecture notes again?
i read quite slowly and i haven't been able to work full speed lately.
