A 39-year-old man with a history of hypertension presents with muscle weakness and fatigue. Laboratory tests reveal a fasting serum glucose of 200 mg/dL, total serum cholesterol of 240 mg/dL, and triglycerides of 220 mg/dL. Serum uric acid is also found to be elevated (10 mg/dL). Serum creatinine kinase (CK) is 45 U/L. Which of the following drugs could have caused these laboratory results?
A. Allopurinol
B. Hydrochlorothiazide
C. Metformin
D. Niacin

Hydrochlorothiazide choice B
  1. Hyperglycemia
  2. Hyperuricemia
  3. Hypelipidemia
  4. Hypokalemia
  5. Hyponatremia

As far as Lipid profile is concerned
  1. Thiazide and Beta blockers have negative effect
  2. alpha blockers have positive effect
  3. Indapamide and CCB no effect

Dear Nan

You must be having some source from where you extracted the information. My reference is below.I will appreciate if you could tell me your reference.Because I am getting confused now.

Best of luck

In your attached reference, it mentions that Indapamide has less effect on lipid and glucose metabolism than HCTZ does. It doesn't mean it has no effect on lipid at all. It belongs to thiazides family, share their common adverse effects. I hope my explaination makes sense to you. Let me know if I am wrong. Thank for the reference.

"Indapamide does not affect lipid or glucose significantly. "

In addition, in your reference " Thiaizides may cause modest chagnes in lipid profiles but theose are often transient, returning to baseline values after 1 year; clinical significance is likely minimal as benefits appear to outweigh risks." I guess it is not a big deal.

Happy studyingnod

Thanks for your time

Honestly speaking I have browsed many books but no one mentions dyslipidemia in case of Indapmide but they do mention for rest of Thiazides.Definitely you must be some reference that idapamide causes "dyslipidemia".Because rest assure this is of clinical significance.Because dyslipidemia makes the indication and contraindication of the drugs because CAD is a big risk factor. It may turn up even in usmle

Waiting for your reference
