Newborns of undcontrolled diabetic mothers are "Hyperinsulemic".This high insulin causes
  1. Maturity arrest of type II pneumocytes
  2. Excessive growth of body (overweight babies) because insulin is a growth factor also.

In addition other chemistry abnormalities are
  1. Hypoglycemia
  2. Hypocalcemia
  3. Hypomagnesemia

Best of luck

In gestational diabetes the new born complications are:
1.neonatal hypoglycemia(hyperglycemia in fetus causes fetal release of insulin.delivery of the baby decreases glucose level from mother, but fetal insulin is still present)
2.macrosomia(insulin increases adipose stores of fat and muscle mass)
3.respiratory distress syndrome(insulin inhibits surfactant production)
4.open neural tube defects
5.transposition of the great vessels.
