I am a 1993 graduate and finished my residency and fellowship in General Surgery in home country. M.D., Ph.D. I have been away from clinical work since the end of 2001. I have 5 years of US clincal research experience and more than 20 first author publications. GC. Three LORs from US physicians (by professors from Stanford and Johns Hopkins).Step 1/step 2/CS: 215/201/clear, all first attempt. I want to apply for IM, pathology and FM, altogether about 150 programs. I do not want to ask if I have any chances, but want to know if my my application is in the right direction. Your sincere suggestion is welcomed.

dont fear ur yr of grad. ur application rocks. esp for patho and surg where they LOVE research. and u have been away from medicine since only 2001. i think u shud concentrate mainly on unis and good progs bcoz they will truly appreciate ur talents. and many comm hosp sometimes get intimidated by such strong research credentials. keep a few small fp progs for backup. gl

Well, I was a practised general surgeon until the end of 2001. I am currently an Research associate at a US top University. My problem is that I work in the Department of Surgery, so I only know surgeons who can give me LORs. It took me long time explaining why I wanted to swith from research to clinical medicine and from surgery to FM, IM and Patho. Even I myself found those PSa are less convincing. But surgery is too competitive for me. I have to say LORs are strong, but my scores and graudation year are a flaws. I will try to match what ever that is possible. BTW, I do not like psychiatry.

And this is meant only as advice in the best of heart... Please have a US-native check your application for spelling errors and grammatical correctness. Your english is excellent, but noticeably foreign. I'm no expert, but I think with so many applications, even the slightest mistake might cause them to disregard what is otherwise a perfect application.
