A 34-year-old woman presents in clinic with a sore throat. She is thought to have a beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection. She is treated with penicillin and starts feeling better shortly thereafter, with less soreness and no fever. Which of the following is the mechanism of the drug she was given?
A. Bactericidal, inhibits cell wall mucopeptide synthesis
B. Bacteriostatic, inhibits protein synthesis
C. Inhibits an enzyme needed for bacterial growth
D. Inhibits cytochrome p450
E. Inhibits nucleic acid synthesis

  #2

Confusing if mucopeptide is synonmous with Peptidoglycan cell wall .

Anyway I will go for C

  #3

A?
penicillin inhibit transpeptidase synthesis

  #4

i also think A. bcos bactericidal is also mentioned.

  #5

it's A....EVERYTHING IS WRITTEN IN OPTION.

  #6

leopard, whats the name of the enzyme?

  #7

transpeptidase.

  #8

then C can also be the ans bcos pen inhibits transpeptidation reactions

  #9

In this question I think choice A is correct. Actually I was mislead by the word "mucopeptide ".I thought it might not be peptidoglycan but in fact

Mucopeptid cell wall = peptidoglycan cell wall.

So I admit my "ignorance of knowledge " about it

Best of luck
