i suppose the cause would depend on location. let us assume the united states for the purposes of the exam. i choose trauma followed by polio in polio, sensation is maintained, motor loss is patchy and involves the flexor group but only to a lesser extent than the extensors. that is why resultant posture is foot drop. with trauma, sensation is lost as well as motor function. when trauma affects the spine, common peroneal nerve or sciatic nerve then deficit affects the whole group of muscles.
