some information here. Preliminary: provides one or two years of prerequisite training for entry into advanced positions in specialty programs that require one or more years of graduate clinical training. Internal medicine, surgery, and Transitional Year programs commonly offer preliminary positions. Categorical: expects applicants to enter in their first postgraduate year (PGY-1) and continue until completion of training required for certification in the specialty. Advanced or PGY2: offered after completion of one or more years of preliminary training. Applicants without prior graduate medical education can apply for these positions while also applying for preliminary positions that are compatible with their future plans. Reserved (also called Physician Positions): positions reserved for physicians who have had prior graduate medical education. These positions are not open to senior medical students. still don't know what is primary care.?
