Hey,

I have applied for residencies in IM in California, and was wanting to touch base with more people who have applied for spots here..
I think it would be good for some of us to be on the same page for info on interview calls etc for this 'golden' state.
Thanks!

I am interested in California. Not applied yet, may be next week. Still waiting for few items.

Did you get California letter?

I am confused about whole letter and procedure. The way I understand it is 4 parallel step process.

1. You fill L1 form, photo and notary singature and mail along with $495
2. You go to police station and take fingre prints and mail with $65
3. Your medical school will mail, L4, L6, transcript and notarized copy of degree
4. ECFMG will send transcript after receiveing money from you.

Is this correct or am I missing something?

Now how do ECFMG will get CA letter, by you or CA medical board will mail directly to ECFMG after getting money from you.

Whole thing is a pain and costing $$$$$.

Hello there,

I do have my California Letter and the procedure is like this..
You are right about mailing the money out with the L1 forms...although, nothing needs to be paid at the police station when you go for the finger print scanning..you just need to fill out a form and they will transmit it directly to the board. Your school will send in the other forms with the transcripts.
After the entire process with the California Medical Board, they will send you a receipt, and consequently your PTAL / letter stating deficiencies. Either of this needs to go to ECFMG with your ERAS document submission form listed as one of your LORs.

Hope I did solve a bit of your doubts..

I have apllied for ptal but completely forgot about transcripts i need to send from ecfmg. CAN YOU PLEASE EXPAIN WHERE AND HOW I CAN ORDER THOSE THANKS

Few more questions

PTAL has 2 fees, 495 for L1 and 65 for figure printing (this fees is again for CA not for your local police department, very sorry for them as they do this for free).

Now who send the finger print card? You take the card to police station, they take finger prints and does police station is supposed to mail it to CA medical board?
Do you send 65 fees for finger printing along with finger print card or along with L1 form?

Now these 4 pieces of infromation are send to CA medical board from 4 different places. How do they keep track of them? I did not see AAMC # kind of thing on any of the forms. Or do they keep them accroding to your name. My concern is in this way it can get lost?

Medical school transcript:
School has to send L4 and L6 form as well. question is can I fill top portion of forms with my information and send to school (in a foreign land) via fax so that they can fill there portion and send it to CA board? Or do I have to mail these forms to school and then school will send to CA board. CA letter is more pain in neck than ERAS.

New to USMLE..
Yeah PTAL is a pain..
I just went to the police station for the finger printing, they transmit it to the CA mEd Board. I sent the entire money at once to the CA Med Board with all the forms.
I think the CA Med Board wouldn't need your AAMC ID, it is your name and credentials they need to certify you. They are pretty good at getting all your info in order, in one place.
Yeah sure, you can fill the info and send it to your school, which is what I did too. Faxing/Mailing is fine, just make sure the original signed copies from the school reach the CA MEd Board.

thanks mindmetor:

How long does it take you to get CA letter. You should count time for the day you send the paper work or from the day finger prints are done. I have done finger print for immigration and generally results are back with few days. CA medical board is saying at their website that it take like 2-3 months to those results back.

How does CA letter look like? Lets assume no background/criminal record issue, then what would be listed on the letter?

How do you arrange to send ECFMG certifcate to CA board? Any website or link would really help?

From the day you send paper work-you get a receipt in a week to 10 days, and assuming you have no deficiencies, you should get it anywhere within 2-3 months. Else, depends on your deficiency and how and when you go about rectifying it.
CA letter looks-well, like a normal letter, nothing glamorous about it. It just says you are permitted to get a post graduate post in California. U can send it to ECFMG with your ERAS documents.

what are the deficienceis? could you give some examples?

I have to take step2ck, is it wise to send paper work any way?

Once they list deficinecy then how to overcome it? Does it mean to start the process all again?

Dear mindmentor,

How long is the validity of PTAL, from the issued date?

Deficiencies mean: less than their requirement in your number of weeks of clerkships in some clinical subjects, I have heard most IMGs being deficient in psychiatry and family medicine( they require 4 weeks of it, and if your tracnsripts according to their evaluation meet less number of weeks, you have to do the elective here in the US or back in your home country before they give you the PTAL).

I think you need to clear all USMLE steps and be ECFMG certified (assuming you are an IMG). I think you can apply, but it will progress only when your Step 2 CK scores reach them.

Robin,
PTAL is valid for a year, you need to keep renewing it.

  #13

mindmentor thanks a lot for the tips.

Some my school grads are doing residenicies in CA and I have not heard that have to do some rotations. We did have 4 weeks of psychiatry and 12 - 28 week of family med, depends how do you count. We call it primary health care and here in usa it is called family medicine. Where you see bacially every thing IM, obgyn, ped, psy etc.

Lets say once you got PTAL with out deficiencies and got residency slot in CA, what do you need to do next? Again more paper work?

  #14

Well then you are all set! Not sure about the paperwork ahead, but would love to let you know if a residency in CA comes true for us! Should be some kind of state liscencing etc.
Good Luck!

Thank mindmentor,

My PTAL application is pending because of official transcript and form L2, L1.

any help

  #17

Hey,
I think you should be fine...the receipt seems to work for getting interview calls....you just need the Cal Letter before you start residency. And Even if you get your PTAL in November...you have quite a fair chance to get more calls after..

  #18

I got California Letter 11/2005. Can I use it for 2007 Match Application?
