Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone knows of any success stories for the combined (research+ residency) programs in IM for IMGs. I am very interested in academic research and have a substantial research experience (? I think) along with a few pubs to back my application... Would like to apply for some of there programs but am very tentative as these programs are obviously based in 'big name' schools and I happen to be an IMG all the way... Anyone?? Thanks!

hi m8 most ppl who apply have phds or a proven track record. i suggest applyin to both research pathway and categ and making a ps with overtones of research if u really wanna give it a shot. and remem to clarify the visa stand. bcoz mayo research scholar pathway clearly mentions that ur ineligible for a j1 visa. also many places like metrohealth cant take u bcoz their funding is nih (not sure) bcoz nih funding comes with a few restrictions. my humble 2c - dont take a research pathway. u spend 2yrs doin research rather than polishing ur clinical skills. if ur heart lies in research u can always pursue it to ur hearts desire after residency. but its not wise to sacrifice on clinical exposure esp if ur a fresh grad like me jai bj

Thanks, M8! 9took me a while to figure that one out... I agree with you all the way...would def not like to be a lab rat again but if you look closely at some of the programs, they do not compromise the clinical training as they are required to have their residents fulfill the requirements for the American Board of Internal Medicine. Some other advantages that appealed to me was: residency at big name schools, assured fellowship of choice (incld. in the program duration), and the possibility of a job in the same school upon graduation as a assistant prof/Instructor... PhD, ofcourse is strongly encouraged and visa is gonna be a big issue but I checked and looks like some of these programs are willing to sponsor H1 as well (but mostly J1)... I have applied only to 100 + categorical programs so far so hopefully, that things taken care of. I have just mailed out feelers to some of these programs...lets see...keep you posted... Jai BJ !!

just 1 thing. meeting reqs of ABIM doesnt mean u did the same number of rotations as the normal candidate. u get much fewer electives. i think u cut out atleast 9months of clin exposure (not sure). but u also got to consider which spec u are tryin for. if its somethin like cardio / gastro u cud run into trouble in visa duration (indicated obliquely on the mayo page) but ur right it cud be a kinda "backdoor" to top notch progs if the dice fall right guerilla warfare?

Hey Doc, I am thinking about this research track too. In most programs say if you are intested in this track just click research when submitting the ERAS application. But where is the research tab? under which category one should see it. I can't locate it.

apurva: you are right about colombia or cornell. I have 2 diffent but similar questions, could you please look into that? 1. let say you want to go to Stanford, under program search or program selected where have their program name, website etc, they have only 2 tracks listed, cate or prelim. But if you go to stanford website they do list research track. Now programs tell you that indicate your research interest in PS, and click research when apply. But if are selecting people based on usmle scores etc then they are not going to know. HOw over come it? 2. Some programs like cornell has different program Match number for research track. Does that mean you have to apply twice there?

1. stanford wont take u if ur img. save ur cash but if that was just and example: call the prog and inquire about details of applyin for research track. they are best guide. 2. no its for ranking in nrmp. dont worry about it. just click both research and categ. gl
