for every unit drop in albumin, the calcium decreases by 0.8 mg/dl in serum. In nephrotic syndrome, the albumin decreases from 4 mg to 2 mg.The total calcium in the serum normally is 6.5.what will be it after nephrotic syndrome sets in? 1.o drop in albumin=0.8mg/dl drop in Ca. 2 unit drop in albumin=6.5 -1.6 OR 6.5+1.6?????

the point is that u will take the ( normal- 1.6) value as normal.

but what idone usually in wards is that u report a corrected calcium level, if the pts albumin were normal. thus the lab gives u the pr's serum calcium. to it u will add ( normal-pt's albumin) *0.8 and u compare this level to the normal reference range.
