can anone please tell me the m/a of propylthiouracil..... in kaplan pharmac book and Q bank both 've diff. explainations.

- Well it has many sites of actions
- Formation of thyroid hormones
- Oxidation of iodine
- Incorporation of iodine into tyrosin residue of thyroglobulin
- Coupling reaction
- Activation of thyroid hormone i.e conversion of T4----------T3
- inhibition of Deiodinase
First three reactions are catalyzed by one enzyme "tHYROPROXIDASE" In other words (in a nutshell) you can say that PTU inhibits - Thyroperoxidase
- Deiodinase

I think ptu is inhibits the oxidation of iodine and conversion of the T4 into T3.Main point of ptu is that ,ptu is the only drug that can be suitable for given in the pregnancy
