1....will that bypass step 2 ck and cs.
2.....is there any chance if i do excellent in step 1 that may compensate for the bad score in step 2.
3...can i improve my step two score bu retsking the exam?
4....for pakistanis the visa situation is really bad..will someone reflect on that.
5..i know my peers have already gone to states or uk.i am married woman and feeling very lonely to embark upon the uncharterred waters of step 1......
6 my husband is very understanding and look after my only son..but still i do part time surgery and have to take the responsibilty

hello gohar , think it a very good decison u have made and inshallah with ur determination u will get through it, i think u can get in to residency with an 82 as well , i have heard of alot of ppl who did, i dont think u can retake any exam , unless it has expired and the time for that i think is 7yrs, what u can do is go to the ECFMG websites and check all the detalis , or u can call the ECFMG office and talk to them personally, i know callin US from pakistan is a lil diffucult , but i think it would be worth while.

the visa situation i understand is tough these days but i know ppl personaly who have done things to wrok through this as well , it might be lil expansive but if u can afford it , ppl get in to MPH (masters in public health) prgramms in the us and they get 2 yr visa for that ,1st yr is for the actual MPH and the other is to work. ppl usually give there step 1 and 2 from there country and then come to US do there MPH or they do that during the programm, after they r done with there MPH , they get one yr time to work, by that time most of the ppl r done with there steps and tryin to mach as well along with there new jobs and once ur in the system u can get H1 visa sponsership and ur processin for the green card begins.

here is one more thing , if u have given ur step 1 from pakistan u will have to take the step 2 in the same region as well , u can not come to US and do that here. about the CS & CK thing im not so sure , for that i think u should call the ECFMG and talk to them.

so ill say , start studin for the step 1 and try to finish it as soon as possible , this forum is a very good place for support and much more , u should spend one day just readin through all the posts in the prep journals, u will know there r alot of ppl goin though the same and u will get a very good idea on how to start.

i hope i have helped u,

Hi Gohar,

Many places look at different steps differently. Some consider Step 2 scores some Step1 and some look at total picture. I would not be dissappointed by a 82. Study hard for Step 1 (even though its more difficult than 2) and try getting around 90. Then pass CS and get some good LORs and show that your surgery experience and write a good personal statement. Then pray hard.... I am a 98 graduate from India and can understand your reluctance but you have to do it. You have to ask yourself how bad do you want it....thats what gave me motivation.

For the visa thingy cant help ya much....thats going to be tough but I have heard a lot of people have and do get their visas for the CS easily (J1s)....dunno about Pakistan.

As aisha said YOU CANNOT RETAKE step 2 unless the scores expires so dont even think about it. What if you fail if you take it again. A pass is better than try to get more points.

There are MANY MANY programs (though they may not be stellar...but who cares) that accept IMGs at any score and from any place.....you just have to know about them. Do you have any classmates or friends who may have come here? They could tell you about those. So dont lose heart getting residency is not very difficult....clearing the exams IS. So get that over with and then you can think about the rest,

I HAVE TWO FRIENDS WITH 75 AND 77 AND BOTH ARE DOING THEIR RESIDENCY. 82 IS A GOOD SCORE. ORGANIZE, PLAN AND DO IT. YOU WILL MAKE IT. VISA IS PROBLEM BUT NOT FOR A ECFMG CERTIFIED DOCTOR. BELIEVE ME IF YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM, U WILL GET THE VISA. THERE SHOULD BE VERY STRONG REASON TO REFUSE A ECFMG CERTIFIED MD.
