18mo old boy passes red currant jelly stool.

differentials?

differentiate between differentials.

  • Venous engorgement and ischemia of the intestinal mucosa cause bleeding and an outpouring of mucous, which results in the classic description of red "currant jelly" stool.
  • in this age group i'd think intussusseption.
      • Two thirds of the cases occur before the patient's first birthday.
      • Intussusception occurrence is rare in persons younger than 3 months, and it becomes less common in persons older than 36 months.
  • other differentials..hmm possibly infectious etiology..need to think abt this one smiling face

meckel diverticulum

intussusception is associated with pain usually while meckel's diverticulum is usually painless.

meckel has rule of 2's. meckel's may be associated with intussception: acts as leading point.
