I would appreciate if someone can answer my question.

I am interested in Anesthesia, and will apply to all categorical anesthesia programs plus all medicine prelims and transitional programs in the NY area. However, I want to leave IM categorical as a back up. If I apply to programs for prelim IM, can I apply o the same program for categorical IM? and if yes, would the prelim IM PD know I applied to categorical IM and vice versa? If they would know, would I say when asked why am applying to both prelim and CAT?
What about this as an option;
1) apply to Cat anesth, prelim IM and IM CAT (by checking 2 boxes in each IM program), then schedule anesth interviews early and see if any anesth programs express interest and if so I would not accept interviews for prelim IM and not CAT IM. However I still am curious to know if at any given program each IM prelim PD and CAT IM PD will know that applied to the other, and would that cause me to not get any interviews from both IM prelim or IM CAT?
2) A worse option is to apply to half the IM programs in NY as CAT and half prelim?
3)The worst option is to apply to CAT anesth, prelim IM and choose another fireld as a back up.

I know this is a long message, but I would really apprecaite if you could answer it.

I think option 2 is best in this case.

But you should send email to ask program coordinator about this question.
