some says that: superior oblique (SO) depresses and abducts eyeball superior rectus (SR) elevates and adducts eyeball inferior oblique (IO) elevates and abducts eyeball inferior rectus (IR) depresses and adducts eyeball some says that when the eyeball is adducted, SO depresses and IO elevates eyeball when the eyeball is abducted, SR elevates and IR depresses eyeball which one is correct? or are they contradictory?? thanks a lot.

Both are correct Second set is used to test different muscles of the eyeball. The rationality behind iswith any muscle having different actions ,ity can perform only action at one time. Suprior rectus has both actions Adduction Elevation of eye ball Now if you full adduct the eye ball all fibers of superior rectus muscles are full contracted ,now they cannot elevate it. Now any other muscle should come in action to elevate it .So it is inferior oblique . You can apply same formula to other muscles

SO depresses in adducted position. SO helps LR in abduction. but both actions cannot be done at the same time.

so if the eye is in a central position, what muscle is responsible for elevating the eyeball, IO or SR?
