Well i m planning to start preparing for USMLE Step 1 from first week of oct 2006 and thinkin of taking it next year in march!
Things that make me curios is its very complicated procedure for gettin this licence to practice medicine in states.
i have visited many site s and this forum and information i have gathered so far is this
Take step 1 and score good
Take step 2 ck n cs and score good
Then send ur residency requests to various programmes and wait for Match
After that you travel to states and finish ur residency

Now this wot i have got to understand
1: When can i take step3?
2: how can i practice medicine in states and stay permanently there
3: how many steps i need to take from India before going to states?
4: if someone is willing to offer internship in a california hospital just after i clear step 1, should i take it or not?
plzzzzzzzz answer my queries as i dun have any one else to ask these question but u people!
chill!

hey...i'll try to answer as many as i can....
1....step 3 can b taken after u get ecfmg certified i,e: step1,2 ck cs cleard..medschool diploma and credentials verifed..also to answer ques 2....step 3 is needed to get a residency which offers h1b visa..this is the visa which u can convert to a green card...
for the h1b u need to clear step 3 before match day...
3....u can give step 1 and 2 ck in india..but thats not necessary..if ur in the us..u can also give from ther....cs is the one only taken in us..
4......hmmmmm...im not clear on that.....do u mean a residency offer??

hope i was clear and helpful...

Jaide answered most of the stuff.....just to add a little...

You can take both Steps in India (Step 1/CK) then apply for a J1 visa from ECFMG to come here to give the exam and on J1 you can work as an observer in any hospital that allows it. Step 3 is after you have been certified.

If you DO get an offer to do observership yeah you should take it. Its very difficult to get observerships here so if you find one take it. Ofcourse you should realize an observership is NOT counted as clinical experience by Hospitals. Its merely shadowing work. Some places consider it but most dont. Having said that having an observership is better than not having one...LOL. Also some places have certain requirements before they will offer you observerships. I know the hospital I work in needs you to complete at least one step before they will consider you for an observership.

Cheers and good luck.
