I am a bit old graduate. Unfortunately my medical school has lost the record of my progress as a medical student in the clerkship.

They can only provide Transcript of periodic examinations but not the MSPE. I wonder how important is that for the program, when I have 4 1/2 year post graduate experience and LOR's from that. (i am applying for surgical residency)

I will appreciate your response BBB.

Rana , you don't have to get an MSPE, a dean's letter written at the Dean's discretion will suffice.

Can you get that from your dean's office? they can emphasize your extracurricular, research, interpersonal and communication abilities in addition to your academic performance, which you should have an idea of. If you know someone there, anyone, just write somthing up or suggest an exhaustive set of points to talk about .

I asked this question to many people, and they said as long as you have anything from your Dean's, that'll do. At least that's better than having a generic one assigned by ECFMG.

That's my personal understanding, I hope it helps.

Good Luck

Thanks Dr. Looli. My medical school has too many students for the Dean to remember after these many years about my extra-curricular activities.

I have another question regarding the publications. You write in the ERAS application but do you have to send the Manuscript to ECFMG/ERAS for uploading on the system for programs to read?

Regarding your extra-curricular Activities, you should have that listed in your Resume/CV already, Send to them along with your PS if possible. MY school in Egypt has the same problem; more than 1000 students. I don't think they'll mind if you have something already written and have them add or omit from it. That sure saves them alot of trouble and time.

As for Publications, I had that same inquery, I don't know if you should provide a copy of your publication?? I sure don't have it, but it's not going to be impossible to get, just an extra hassle for me.

Hope someone has something informative on the matter.

I am assuming that you belong to indian subcontinent..... to be honest, in my past experience and all the information that I have gathered from Indain and Paksitani students... the dean's secretary or PA will type your name into a general format that they have designed for every student of their college who asks for dean's letter.... All they change in the general format is the name, Date of birth, graduation date, any distinctions in your marks sheet ... if you are able to get a letter like this.. it suffices for dean's letter.... MSPE is not reqd if you produce dean's letter... I hope this helps...
I hope this helps

As far as I am concerned the program director usually wait to see your Dean's Letter before you invited for interview. try to catch it before 1st of November. it really worth.
