You need a J1. But if you are going to be in an observership they will give you the papers you need to get your visa J1 and it's going to be only for 3 months or the time you will be with them.

Dear chemamr, is it a must that u should get a J1 visa for an observship? or is it possible to do an observship on B1/B2 visa?

I just went to an immigration lawyer, because they denied my last extension of my b1. I work as a volunteer in research and before I did a 5-month externship. The lawyer told me you cannot be a volunteer on a B1, you cannot take your exams (Step 2 Cs) on a B1, etc. Before igot my extension without any problem. Is it just that there is widespread hatred and discrimination against foreigners? By what the lawyer said- it's almost impossible for a foreigner to do things here-I mean, programs prefer LoR from US-And HOW ON EARTH DO YOU GET THEM APART FROM DOING EXTERNSHIPS, VOLUNTEERING, ETC?

No, it's just the laws. I can't go to another country and live and work just because I want to (I would have stayed in Europe if I could have done that).

Well, laws exist to give a frame for justice and a peaceful coexistence of living beings. How well they achieve this, I don't know. What I know is that current immigration laws in the US make it almost impossible for many of qualified FMGs to come here.(letter of the law) For example, the income requirements for a B1 visa leave out most practicing doctors in Argentina, all teachers (no exceptions) What to say about the general rule that the older you get after graduation from medical school, the least desirable you become to programs. I had passed Step 1 with 247 points in Buenos Aires, in 2001. If instead of trying repeatedly to get my experience here, I had started my residency in Argentina, most likely I would be making barely 200$ a month. I would be spending all the money just to get by, and ECFMG certification would have been impossible. Then when the American embassy gave me my visa, they did not care about my financial situation, but instead (spirit of justice) they gave me a chance, based on my good scores. If money is the criterion for giving anyone a chance, then that is what you will get (not the smartest people but the richest) And there will be a downward drift in academic circles. Good American students can dodge this obstacle thanks to the existence of scholarships. But foreigners are in another place. What you are likely to see in the next decades is a dearth of Latino professionals. We are mostly poor people. Hopefully in several decades Hispanics in this country will get more assimilated and "catch up". About myself, I think I 'll just give up. Bye . Thanks bb.
