Hi balutpwr. Go to ECFMG website - then go to Oasis - then click ERAS token request - click residency token - check the date your documents were received. It used to take 10 business days from the date your documents were received by ECFMG to be posted on ERAS. Now, Its probably a shorter transmission delay since fewer applicants are submitting their documents at this time.

Not to change the topic, just want to ask you guys who are ahead about this: Do foreign trained medical graduates automatically get a label of substandard medical education/practice in the US? Anyways, someone who is taking his D.O. in the US is claiming that FMG's/IMG's are labeled substandard by vthe AMA? I haven't heard of it but I just run acroos this person while I am trying to prepare for the mle (was he discouraging me?hehehe), and I've never heard of such thing. The dean of my school has been a dean in schools in canada and the US and she has always been encouraging about pursuing medicine in the US. No mention of that substandard thing. Based on our technology, maybe we're not as advanced in application (we do know things exist), but I believe medicine is medicine. Just curious....

hey happy new year everyone, i see that there are new members here, marami na umaalis talaga sa homecountry. Anyway, march is just around the corner, good luck to all of us entering the match. Nakakakaba na, hopefully we get matched, or else it's the scramble for us. got my certificate a month ago and i'm preparing for step 3. Anyone who finished step 3 na? i'm trying to study in about six weeks coz i'm supposed to take the exam by mid feb, so results would come out hopefully before the match..... good luck everyone and kudos!

to balutpwr: just go to ecfmg.org, click eras at the side bar, then in the new webpage, in the opening lines, it says which documents are already being scanned depending upon the receive date. yep, its faster lately coz most applicants are now working on their match ROLs instead of their eras applications i guess.

Hi lovies. Biases do exist but I guess labelling IMGs or even AMGs as substandard is a matter of personal opinion, perception or experience rather than an accepted generalization in the US. My point of view is : let us improve on each others weaknesses and absorb each others strengths. I believe a good doctor will always prove to be a good doctor given the same opportunity regardless of background (another way of putting " medicine is medicine"). Opportunities abound here; getting into their system & proving yourself lang ang major challenge.

Hi Hecmd23. Good to have you back. Hows your application going if you dont mind. I dont have any interview invites, many rejections emails, so malamang sa Scramble na lang ang chance ko. Good luck sa Step 3 mo. Im thinking of takin it this year if I dont get matched.

scalpeldoc, yep i'm in the same boat, no interview invites, and a ton of rejections. I guess sa scramble na nga lang talaga, tough year for surgery i guess. but i'm hoping someone could help me, the doctor i'm doing my observership with likes how i work, and he's calling some of his connections in one hospital so that he can get me in there.... small program and IM llang daw nya ko matutulungan, well, hopefully it turns out ok, coz this is really a nervewraking experience already. i'd like to go into surgery, pero if everythign went well with that hosp, i guess i'll take it. good luck everyone!

balutpwr, plus points: Im in the US;permanent resident visa status; residency experience in the Phil. w good LORs minus points: low USMLE scores (low 80's) ; more than 10 years since graduation; no US clinical experience, no US research Aims high for Surgery residency here.I applied to 21 programs with 9 rejections so far and no interviews. I guess that gives you a rough idea where I stand hecmd23, Thanks for the reply. I know how you feel and I really hope you will get a residency position too in IM or in Surgery much better. I am not giving up Surgery even if I dont make it in the scramble. There are some things that I cannot change like my scores and that IM an old IMG but there are certainly other avenues where I could improve my desirability as an applicant and I'll work on that. God bless us all.

Hi merry christmas and happy new year. I've been here for only a couple of months and already i'm missing manila. I need your input on this one: If you are going to rank a hospital, one is university based but the location is not good, benefits are okay but the program is outstanding, you get to see a lot of cases versus a community hospital with great benefits, great location, okay training program, which would you rank first?

Hi louisemd21. I would rank first the university program. Aside from the outstanding training and okay benefits you mentioned , it will be a better reference once you go into specialization. The location may not be good but as long as it is in a safe neighborhood then I think it would be less of a factor since you will be spending most of your time anyway in the hospital It seems you are lucky in this match season.

scalpeldoc, i guess the only mistake i did entering this match is that i didn't apply to any backup specialties, it was surgery for me all the way. all my LORS, MSPE and PS were tailored for surgery, thinking i can make it, it was just recently when i was doing my observership here that i realized i should have at least applied to some IM programs (which by the way I hate so much, that's why i didn't apply). i have this mindset kasi na if you want something so bad, do everything to get it, don't settle for something less than what you want. Never have back-up plans, no plan B's, so that you can focus on the one thing that you want. Coz i believe that having a back-up plan can cloud your mind in reaching your goals, that when it seems you can't reach it, you can always say "well i can always fall back into something else"... parang consolation prize, you're happy to get it, but you just felt that way coz you won "something" but not the 1st prize......which is something i don't want to happen to me. call me stubborn to believe i can still get into surgery, but this is something i want to do for the rest of my life, and i don't want "the rest of my life" to start with being stuck with something i dont want to do. i know it's a tough match this year, ang dami applicants, i think record ata. pero just like you, i'm still not giving up on surgery, just like my freid who never gave up on hers (flunked step 1 three times, shes doing surg right now in NC). so why am i ranting about this stuff? i guess i'm mentally drained with all the match process, i'm burned out just thinking how the future will be. sorry about that guys, just needed to get everything out. still, there's a lot of hope out there, it ain't over until results are out, and finding a spot in the scramble is much much easier, if you're fast enough, hehe. good luck everyone, things will be better for all of us.

hecmd23! i support you all the way! tama ka diyan. ako naman, i looove IM, and see myself in no other specialty except IM. When a friend asked me what my back up plan was, like pedia or fm, i told them i was applying IM or nothing at all. I wouldn't be happy if nag fm ako or pedia. I know someone who could get me a sure spot in FM, but i turned it down because i know, i was meant to do IM and hold those darn defibrillators. I'm sure you will get the spot at the right time. Just don't give up on your dream of being a surgeon!

Hi hecmd23. Tnx for the message. It lightens up this dreadful feeling of uncertainty. I also applied to Surgery programs ONLY. When I started this match , my hope was to continue doing what I love to do, and that is Surgery. I had that opportunity back home and it was a really gratifying and fulfilling phase of my life. Life changes came my way so here I am groping for a chance into residency in the US. The prayers and support of my family, patients, mentors and friends are my great source of strength. Its better to learn from others mistakes so they say But many times we commit them ourselves and the lessons we learn takes a deeper meaning. Im sure all of us would come out as better applicants next time if in case we wont make it in this match. I'd go for any prelim or transitional positions in any specialty available in the scramble, and if I get lucky that US experience would be a good stepping stone for SURGERY SURGERY SURGERY SURGERY pa rin

louismd and scalpeldoc, and everyone going through the match, this is one of my inspirations going through this match: here's a scene from GATTACA, i dunno if you remember this one, vincent (played by ethan hawke) was challenging his brother, anton (the perfect one, genetically purebred, better than him in all aspects) to race swimming into the open ocean.... remember vincent was the lower class, the imperfect labelled by the near purified genetic community of the so-called future. vincent has the heart problem that makes him the unhealthy one, bt everytime they go for a swim, he ALWAYS beats his brother (the genetically purebred). and for the last time, vincent proves to his brother again that he can beat him. anton, gasps for breath as he looks across the ocean to see vincent is already several meters infront of him. Then anton asks, near drowning - "Vincent, how are you doing this?" vincent replies calmly as he looks back to his brother "you know how i always beat you anton? you want to know how? I never saved anything for the swim back" That last line stuck in my head for several years. don't save anything for the swim back, focus on your goal, and try to reach it, don't save anything for something else. I have my sights aimed for surgery, and i'm not saving anything for something else. It's a tough ride, but if i have to take the longer way to get there, i got plenty of reserves. if i don't match, i'll pick up myself during the scramble - hopefully, a preliminary year is available (with tons every year), and then ride the whole year and apply again next year, now as a better applicant. good luck everyone, god speed!

dear hec, i know someone who got into orthopedic surgery. How? Well he did not save anything back. Ethan hawke... Hahahaha anyways he finished residency in the philippines, took fellowship in surgery sa rush (!) and then he applied for residency sa surgery. Patok. he has interviews... though that is super tagal, but besides board scores sa usmle, i think if wala talaga, try getting that one year us clinical experience and work on the connections.
Alam ko you will be a surgeon someday here in the US, improbable yes, but not impossible. Yan ang motto ko. Okay, after some time, you could do cardio referral to me pag kailangan ng patients mo ang cardio clearance... )

read your post askdoc (what to do?)..AMAZING! I should have read this a long time ago. Thanks a lot. I'm done with my self diagnosis and planning for the treatment now. It gives me a totally different perspective now on how to approach step 1. Good luck on your match. May your tribe increase!

louisemd thanks, hopefully we get what we really want. and yes, after 5 or 6 years of surgery, yoo'll be the one to send patients sakin if they need surgical consult.... remember, baliktad dito sa US, primary physicians muna ang titingin and they will decide if the patient needs surgical consult......but hey if a patent comes i directly to me, i'll send a referral for clearance prior to surgery, syempre tayo tayo lang magtutulungan dito. good luck!
