hey pinoyako. i'm also from a school way way up north of luzon. during this season i have just one invitation from a program that has up to 600 to interview with just 26 slots. my question is is it worth it. is it worth going to,a solo interview. i'm right now in the philippines and have no relatives to stay with. thanks in advance for the advice.

delpilar you are the only one who can say whether it is worth it. it all depends on your financial situation and what program is interviewing you. how much have they expressed interest? what program is it? universtiy or community? where is it? when is the interview? also, isn't one interview better than zero? i only had 2 interviews, and both wanted me to join. perhaps this 1 interview of yours will be the one...d b?

I got on this site by by accident and I was surprised to find an active Filipino thread here. Congratulations on all those who were matched by the way. Your inputs are greatly appreciated. Here's my case. I graduated from medical school 2005 and finished my step 1 in 2006. By some stroke of luck I was able get a visitor's visa to the US and was hired to do clinical research on a J1 visa sponsorship. After a year at Mount Sinai and 2 published papers I was hired as Faculty for Research here in Columbia University. My current director is willing to sponsor me for a green card but I just got an advisory opinion from the DOS saying that I am subject to the 2 year home residency rule because of my skills category of Cardiology Research. They considered this as Medical specialization. I was surprised by the decision since all the while I knew that medical research as a separate category was never on the skills list for the Philippines. To cut the long story short, Im actually at the crossroads of choosing the following options. 1) Start the green card process which would take at least 3-4 years and while waiting finish all my exams and take masters of public health. but then this will place me outside the 5-year window. or 2) just finish my exams and change category from J1 clinical to J1 research. but then I read from some posts that ECFMG has a ruling that it will not consider changes in j1 categories from research to clinical. The advisory opinion from the Department of State also complicated matters. I consulted the CFO and they advised me to take the waiver but I should have completed at least 3/4 of my research program which is not until after 2 years. My heart still belong to the clinical practice and Im already getting frustrated about the situation. I would very much appreciate your advise on my case. Thanks!

Hello Everyone! Im so glad I've found this site. I graduated in 2000, passed the boards in the phils. (didn't have time to go into residency because i have to live in LA) Anyway, currently I work as an RN Supervisor and always wondered on how to be a doctor and work as a doctor here in the US. I planned on taking the USMLE, and that's what lead me to this wonderful, awesome, informative site. But I have one problem. I live in LA and according to what I have been hearing is that it's hard to apply as a resident here in CA if you are an IMG. is that true? Is there anyone here who is currently taking their residency here in CA? Or know anything about this, or know somebody who is having a residency here in CA particularly in the SoCAL.? If there's someone out there MAGPARAMDAM ka naman please?

hi, sleepless in LA. for now, I'm sleepless in Orange County since I'm staying with relatives for the holidays. from what i hear, it's not impossible to get into residency in soCal, just more difficult than say, the east coast. there is a limited number of hospitals/programs in this area that is IMG-friendly. but, i suppose with good grades (and with the competition here that means spectacular grades, min 90s), enthusiastic letters of recommendation, the right contacts, plus your years of clinical experience in the bag, you stand a fighting chance of landing a position here. look up also the requirements for the PTAL from the CA board, which is an additional requirement for doctors wishing to practice or train in CA. as to the resources on this site, based on my own experience, they were useful. of course, these weren't the only ones i used. good luck! i hope this helps.

Hi george! Thanks for the reply. Yes I've checked the California Medical Board and already listed down their requirements for licensing. PTAL? I've had my post graduate training in the Phils, does that mean I still have to obtain this PTAL to be able to apply for the California License? is this the one what they call the California lettter? if yes, then does that mean I have to repeat the Post Grad training here in US? OMG, i have so much questions running in my head right now. Re: observerships, USCE, when should be accomplishing those, should i do those first even before starting the USMLE steps? And a lot more questions. hope you could help me on that or anybody who reads this thread. Thank you so much!

^which post grad training are you referring to? if you are currently working as an RN supervisor, then you have enough clinical experience for the meantime. i suggest you focus on the USMLE steps because being an old grad (we're the same batch so i know what the situation is like), you have to get impressive scores just so programs will even consider you for interview. since you're in the medical world, maybe you can ask doctors who you know are connected with any residency training program and ask them if your present work experience is enough. but, if i were you, i would go full force into externships or observerships once i'm through with the exams. unless, of course, you get reassuring feedback from those doctors. and yes, i think the California letter is the PTAL thing. I'm not too sure about it because I only looked it up once before I decided not to appy in this state.

Hi George! Thanks again for the reply. Im talking about the california letter, my question is how can I obtain that>? by doing the Post graduate training here in the US>? or the PG training that I did in the Phils is enough? I know I'm an old graduate na rin kaya nga im having second thoughts about this whole thing. but at the same time kept wondering what it's like to be one . . . . oh well
