Bye the way, if you know anyone in residency, some programs allow each resident to recommend a candidate. Last year I recommended my distant cousin whom I had never met, and he got an interview.
Also make sure you have a strong personal statement. That is another thing some people neglect because they don't understand its importance. A good statement can make you or break you. Mine really helped with my residency and fellowship.
Oh yeah, my chief resident in my first year was pinoy!! pinoy power!!

Congratulations, pinoyako for completing residency. Your input also helps a lot of people posting on this board.
However, I really would like to disagree with your recommending someone you've never met to your residency program, may he/she be a relative. I find this practice dishonest, as your program genuinely looks to the residents to recommend someone they actually know and believe will be an asset to the program. I understand your desire to help out a fellow pinoy, but there are other ways to help. Imagine if all pinoys in all programs did this, sooner or later the PDs will recognize that candidates are only being recommended because they are Filipino and nothing else. Recommendations by pinoys will then be viewed with wariness and suspicion, and throws a bad light on all pinoys in general.
Sorry to rain on your parade, but I just had to speak out. I agree we all have to help each other, but not in this way.

I agree with you in a way, but unfortunately, that's just how the system works. I would not recommend a stranger, or some distant relative I never met. I talked to my cousin prior to recommending him of course. I basically interviewed him several times, found out he had good scores, and he had a good attitude. Because in the end, if you recommend someone who doesn't work out well, YOU look really bad. In fact our PD has specifically warned us not to recommend someone we don't know. 
Anyway, I wish everyone on this forum well. Just decided to drop by after being absent for a few years.
Final word...we have someone in our program with great scores..a very intelligent resident...I think he scored 99/99 on steps..and he's getting kicked out!... Attitude is very important.

soRry to interrupt...i am the guy from page 2 of this thread...i just received my score today for step 1(take 3) and i finally PASSED!!! PRAISE JESUS!...WHEW!... i have been thru a lot...depression, discouraged, quiting, hating myself... but i persevered...i persevered...i kept going...studied for 9 months more...and finally got my reward for hard work and diligence....IF YOU FAILED BEFORE YOU CAN DO IT...DONT GIVE UP!!!....PLEASE DONT GIVE UP...

hi maricar,
join pinoymle forum at googlegroups and there is an uploaded file there of IMG friendly hospitals, both IM & FP, but it is as of 2006. Get that list and update it by visiting the website or emailing the programs. Those are incomplete so just add other programs listed in FREIDA. You can also check out digitaldoc's blog.

to pinoyako or anyone out there...honestly what would you say to me...multiple attempts in step 1...old graduate (10 years)...41 years old presently...no USCE yet...green card holder...do i have a chance in my dream of residency?...and...is EMT(emergency medical technician , not paramedic) a USCE?

@tg250, it is difficult but not impossible. if you're doing EMT work then that's good. as long as you are in the medical field. you can check out some interesting discussion in usmleforum.com and search the topic "seeking advice from fellow pinoys". i hope you'll be inspired by some of the comments made particularly the one given by totaltotal.
i myself have planned this dream late 2000 after i graduated. and it is 2008 now. hoping to get matched this year. been denied tourist visa for CSA twice in 2003 and so i had to do residency & completed it in 2006. finally did my CS last Aug & now i am back in the trail. my friend in NY who is chief res now in surgery has a co-resident who is 50...at na-match pa sa cardio-thoracic fellowship. again in the forum above, search "pinoy" or "pinoy ortho" and there is an ortho guy there who have practiced his craft for 15 years then just migrated last year. he was asking advice and is hoping to get in the surgical field in the US. he was able to pass his step 1 too last year. he may be going for the match this year too. i sincerely wish you the best of luck. enjoy the ride!

Hi guys!!! Im taking Step 1 in April, but I did my Kaplan Q bank a few days ago and got 50%! Im super panicking....should I reschedule my exam, or trudge on? I'm leaning more on taking it nonetheless coz im highly motivated...pero I'm afraid im fighting a losing battle....any advice guys?
btw, i graduated from med school in 2000, did my residency and fellowship in the Philippines and am a diplomate already in my subspecialty. that's why i dont like my odds....

Hi everyone! Been months since i posted (I think?).
MARICAR... Sorry for the late reply. About your extension query..i filed for an i94 extension since I was only given 3 months and after passing the CS, I thought I would go ahead and take Step 3. I already have a test date for that come May, so while I await the i94 result I am doing my step 3 prep and would most likely take it earlier if i feel I am ready. I know the chances of getting an i94 extension are slim, but at least I could stay while that is being processed. I know someone who applied for an i94 extension back in November and just got her denial a few days ago.

Hmmm... My I-94 extension request last year was approved. I didn't use it though. I went home before my original "deadline" to stay and just came back for interview season and the Step 3.
Good luck on the Step 3 though, xthine. It's tough but doable. I studied while on the interview trail and still did ok.

Oh, and I urge you to be careful with the I-94 extension request. While your case is being processed, you are in status even if the "deadline" (i.e. the date up to which you are allowed to stay - stamped on your I-94 at the port of entry) has passed. However, my understanding is, if they deny you, you will have to get out of the US in a "reasonable amount of time" from the date you are denied. This is open to interpretation, and I do believe that they will and can hold you as out-of-status from the date of denial itself. This means you cannot enter the US for (5? 10?) years and your visa will automatically become void (even if it is a 10-year multiple entry).
See, I found this out after applying and just chose to go home rather than risk the consequences. Good luck!

2 weeks to go. I can taste the anxiety in the air.
Something I just unearthed a couple days ago... just to keep this thread going and to pass time until match day, what do you think of this recent article - how is it going to affect us... those who already macthed in previous years and those who will eventually match in the next years.... or will it even affect us? Im no expert with immigration law and work laws so I'll just let everyone discuss this here. Mind you, this was already implemented this january.

luckily, there were some pinoys in other websites that were also discussing this, and apparently, this was the recent development on this article:
POEA suspends implementation of new direct hiring policy
Secretary Arturo D. Brion has instructed the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration to suspend immediately the implementation of POEA Memorandum Circular No. 4, Series of 2007.
The POEA will process documents of directly hired Filipino workers using the procedures used before January 15, 2008 where repatriation and performance bonds are not required from the employers.
So, i hope it has extinguished any fires.

Hi Kali! Yeah I checked the USCIS site a few days ago. Says there that the stay is legal while they process the application and if denied, one has 30 days to leave the country. . Thanks for the additional info.
Anyone else out there preparing for Step 3?

hecmd23, I think if you're getting a J1, since you're technically not an overseas worker, this new memo will not affect you at all. If you're getting an H however, still no worries. The memo has been suspended, as you posted, plus professional jobs, especially ones in the US (which they assume to be given by reputable employers) will probably be exempt from these rules.

Take the NBME first and gauge where you stand. 400 is a good score.
50% in kaplan is little low.. Defer exam and study more.

hello
i've been reading this forum for quite a while but it's my first time to post. I enjoy reading everyone's experiences coz they are very helpful and it's nice to hear from fellow Pinoys who are already there in the US.
i graduated from UST last 2006, did my internship, took Step 1 last November, then passed Phil Board exam last Feb. I passed Step 1 but with a low score. I plan on taking CK in June then CS in July or August. My problem is i have yet to apply for a visa and I don't know how and when should I do USCE.
