not sure about ob-gyn maricar...suggest you do research...try the ob section of this forum and see where imgs are getting ivs...cgh, hmmm, i have friends who did internship there...cristine chan? hec, congrats on a great start for the week...an iv is an iv...better than a rejection or like what i got...complete and utter silence! you're right about over-analyzing...i should just let it go. anyway, i'm looking forward to northwestern...it was really unexpected...i'm just very lucky to have been given the opportunity. God willing, i'll start nov. 12th. anyway, this week will be the 2nd week that my app is complete (minus MSPE)...should i wait it out? or do you guys suggest i write to programs to ask what the status of my app is? or is that a death wish that will just speed up rejections? if i do write, what do you suggest i say? what do you all think?

Thanks ustmd2006, will do. Additional questions regarding visa and applying for work in the US: When I am a b1/b2 visa holder can i apply for a "job" in the U.S? (observership/extership/asst. clinical work-what is the difference?) i am planning to go to the US for my CS exam scheduled early next year. after taking the exam i was thinking of applying for a job (btw, where should i look to know who offers such?) . not to mention it will look good when i apply to programs right? Thnaks!!! Christine chan?, um . . . it doesn't ring a bell, i really don't know much of the batch that followed ours. SOrry.

hi maricar, ob is quite tough, i know its easier to get into surgery than OB, if you want to look at it that way. Though, a lot of my friends, who wanted to do OB, applied for FM instead. there's a considerable amount of time spent doing OB stuff in FM so its not that far away from what you really want. Its perfectly legal to do an observership/externship/research on a B1/B2 visa. The difference between an observership and externship is the things you can and cannot do to a patient - when you observe, you can't do anything to a patient (some hospitals even forbid you to take histories...but for some, its just up to history taking...externship is more handson, you can write at the charts and you can play a more active role in the diagnosis/management of patients. I advice you to email as many hospitals as you can with regards to observerships and research. I landed on this research I'm working on right now, by just blindly sending emails to surgeons across the US of A if I can voluteer my services to them... a few replied that they don't need an assistant, some will reply that they don't have any current projects...luckily, for my part, someone needed some help, and it was a big named university hospital. So just send out a couple hundred emails, and wait for a positive reply. Unless you have any contacts, that would be an easier way to secure volunteer spots. good luck!

i wrote to programs...just to follow up and inform them that i cleared cs and am now ecfmg certified. within a few minutes i got a rejection from ohio state. it seems that they have filled their slots for some time now. i'm glad i wrote...at least i know that's another one to scratch off the list. i'd rather that than being left in the dark with false hope. good night...

Thanks hec and ustmd2006 for the advice. I'll be leaving on the 12th so my body has enough time to adjust to climate and the time zone. I'll be bringing with me FA, NMS and Kaplan for the CS. Hopefully those books will do. Do you need a PTAL to qualify for observership/externship in California? Goodluck to everyone on their interviews

ustmd, you have relatives here in chicago? its gonna be tough to find a place, especially in the downtown area. But if you have no qualms living at the outskirts of the city, i mean, it will take you probably a good thirty minutes to one hour of travel time to go to northwestern, then there are lots of apartments around the city, but like what i said, its quite far from downtown. Unless you can afford a condo, then I'm, sure you can find something near the area, probably a couple of blocks from the hospital. I'm sure there are apartments also coz there are three univeristies in that area, but i dunno about their availability though. I'm thinking, with classes that just started a couple of months ago, most of them are booked. Sorry, really have no idea about this, was fortunate enough to have a relative her, but I got to painstakingly endure th morning commute everyday. g'luck!

hey hec...thanks! no, i don't have relatives there...but i think i found a decent place...real excited about the rotation. it'll be invaluable experience for my future residency. it's been quiet for me with regards to actual invites/rejections. i'm hoping that after the mspes i'll hear something...invites better than rejections...but any word is welcome! just trying to concentrate on my upcoming interviews. will be in boston on the 7th and philly on the 8th! wish me luck!!!

Hi everyone? Is it ok to ask if a certain program offers prematch? Is this not an NRMP violation? Thanks. Good luck.

Hi clyde, i think prematch is perfectly legal, even the big hospitals offer them. 3/4 of my batchmates who got in last year were all via prematch...and at good programs! Regarding asking for one, I guess it would depend on the interview. For sure you'll have a sense of how much they like you during your interview, then its up to you if you want to ask, and I guess its also in the manner of asking, without being too desperate or something. Personally, can't say I won't ask for it, but I will definitely consider asking for it if my interview goes well. ustmd, regarding interview tips, read iserson's. I got a copy of it a month ago, and it has good stuff in it. g'luck everyone!

Hey Hecmd. Thanks. I too have heard of multiple prematches which have been offered. I was planning on asking the programs too for a prematch depending on how my interviews go. So how's your stint in Rush? Did you at least get a chance for an interview there. I am not sure if this is the same Rush which published a book which is a reviewer for surgery boards. This was a popular book for fellows and in-service exams in the phil. coll. of surgeons. You might want to get a hold of it or at least be familiar with it especially if you got an invitation there. Anyway, ive had no luck in surgery yet. Though I think just a fourth or fifth of the programs have replied with either a rejection or an acknowledgent of receipt of my docs. im still hoping for it. fellow pinoys, anybody out there who has any feedback or an idea of Advocate Lutheran FM program in IL or at least how they hold their interviews? This is going to be my first stop then Im off to michigan at Genesys Regional.

Hi clyde, Hmm, not really familiar with that book, but I guess there's only one Rush University with a surgery residency. And, the doctor I'm working with claimed that he's a panelist in the american oral boards for surgery licensure, so i guess its the same institution that published that book. Anyway, he was kind enough to get me a prelim interview spot, however, they haven't sent out invites yet, so yeah, he just told me to wait for it. research is doing ok, we're finalizing the paper, and just got approval for publication at NEJM. i'll be credited as the second author, thank god, i thought I'll be down the line after all those surgery attendings on board our project. Regarding advocate, I think its a nice hospital, been there once also, but a big chunk of the hospital was being renovated then, not sure if its finished by now. Good luck with your interview! I will also be attending a couple of interviews next week for fm...how i wish they were for surgery though. But, hey, an interview is still an interview. g'luck...and hope there are more interviews to come.

sammie, I applied to majority of FM programs in Texas and so far all I got were rejections. I applied to several Surgery programs last year in Texas and got no interview invitations. There are a lot of good programs in Texas. Others pinoys had better luck in their application. . . and maybe you too.

ustmd, hehe, funny thing, i'm flying out of chicago tom, i'll be attending two interviews out of state eh, so i'll be gone for the week. Good luck with your observership! And yep, thats right, just be yourself during interviews, both sides are trying to impress each other - the applicant and the PD, so there's not much to worry about, and just leave everthing to fate. g'luck!
