Question, how early can I re-transmit my USMLE transcript? Is now too early for my CS results to show up? If I should wait, how long? Tonight? Tomorrow morning?

And with regards to our ECFMG status, now that I'm "certified" (although they say they'll send me the certificate after 2 weeks), will ECFMG automatically update the programs that I applied to? And if not, how do I get them to do that?

Thanks thanks!!! smiling face

kaikangaru, how was CS? i'm sure you're remembering that you forgot to do this or ask that or write this or that in the note...but my advice is to just let it go...and forget about it...it will creep into your mind again as the results come near (it did for me anyway!), but you should be fine!

as for the interviews in the same hospital but different departments...hmmm...that's a hard one. i say the difficulty will be if they are close to each other and the members of each converse. and you may run into people from the first day who might ask you what you're still doing there. it will be hard to say to both departments that this is what you want to do. but then again, parang sayang nga. i guess others will have better advice! that's one reason i decided to stick to one specialty...i wouldn't know what to do in that situation...sorry!

yep, hoping these publications can help.

Congrats ustmd! toldya. so i'm raising my glass again to congratulate you, haha. Well, one more exam to go. Anyway, as far as usmle trascripts are concerned, did you chooce the "automatic transmission" option, if so, you don't have to worry about it, it will be transmitted as soon as ecfmg updates your status, could be within 24 hours or the next couple of days. Now if you chose manual transmission, I guess its the same thing, once ecfmg updates your status, then you can retransmit your usmle transcript. So, the important thing for you do is to check ADTS and confirm whether ecfmg sends a new STATUS report - you'll see a new or more recent status report uploaded "but not yet retrieved" note in adts. I think its almost simultaneous once your score gets reported, wait within the day i guess.

for kaikangaru, i have to agree with ustmd, i had the same concerns appying to different departments in the same hospital, what if someone from my first interview sees me on the day i'm supposed to have my second interview, its a small world (i bumped into some friends of mine way back in gradeschool while i was doing my research here - the chances of meeting someone again is even higher if its in the same hospital in a span of just two days, i guess you know what i mean). Unless its a really big hospital, i would sit down and think about it for a while, but I think I'd rather not risk my chances. But one thing I'm very sure of is that program directors/coordinators from different departments DON'T compare applicant files, so they don't have any means of knowing whether this certain applicant applied to another department in the same hospital -UNLESS they see you again attending another interview. Now you're saying that your gut feel is telling you to stick to one.... listen to it, its almost always right.

Regarding non-interest to an invitation, I think courtesy should be the answer. It pays to be courteous all the time. Just send a short e-mail declining the invitation, and i don't think you need to explain yourself regarding reasons for the decline.

g'luck!

thanks hec! for the benefit of those who got their scores, i just called ecfmg and wanted to share what i learned. they told me that an updated ecfmg status report should be sent within the next few days of our latest exam result. and then another one will be sent once we're "certified" officially.

as for the profile, we can't change that until we see on oasis that we are officially certified (certification page).

hope that helps! if you wanna call them yourselves or have another inquiry, the number is (215) 386-5900...they're really efficient and friendly!

as for the transcript, it says that scores from the date of request will be included...so i decided to wait until this morning to re-transmit to make sure cs is included. it does take a day or two though...so that sucks!

quiet again for me...no surprise!

good luck guys! smiling face

  #405

thank you lilacmd and xthine(yup, im from GT too). hope to ace the exams. kasi if i just aim for passing baka sumablay pa, lumagpak. hayaan niyo na akong sumuntok sa buwan, libre naman ang mangarap!!! (pero mahal ang bayad sa exam, sayang din!)

good luck everyone!grin

  #406

hey guys! i was hoping to end the week on another silent note, but i guess i'm ending it with a sour one! arg! first rejection guys...duke. it still stings even though you expect it...sad

  #407

hello! newbie here!

just to get a survey going... how many programs did you apply to?

so far 48 for me? enough na kaya yun?

  #408

hello!
i am a 2005 graduate from ust
tanong ko lang :
how does one compose the mspe?
meron ba kayong sample that i can see
kasi the aamc template is a little complicated to follow.

saka, from whom did you get your LOR's?

any inputs will be greatly appreciated
thanks

  #409

as if ending the week with a rejection wasn't bad enough...started this week with one too. indiana university...and what sucks is i really wanted to go to this program. sad

anyway, hi maricar! did you do your internship at ust? you might be one of my interns! batch '06 ako!

anyway, ust has us make our own mspe and then they'll edit it...that takes a while since a lot of people are requesting it. i googled samples on the net and followed their format. unfortunately, we can't make any of the tables and graphs because we don't have the data.

as for the LORs, it depends...if you can get them from u.s. doctors, it will be to your advantage. if your applying for im, certain programs require a letter from the department head...dr. j. go in our case.

good luck!

how's everyone else doing?

  #410

hey everyone! =) thanks for your replies on the interview situation. i've politely declined one already. im doing good, adding to the list slowly but surely.

leotard, i applied to 70 programs for 2 specialties. i realize now it was overkill, but i just wanted to cover all my bases. =) 48 sounds like a good number.

maricar, i wasnt even able to get an mspe from my school. hahaha. deans letter lang daw kaya nila gawin. my LORs were all from philippine doctors, and i made sure to get the chair of each dept i applied to (like what ustmd said).

  #411

hi folks...it seems i'm on a roll this week...gotten a message a day in myeras...unfortunately it's all been rejections! lol! i'm starting to get nervous now...it's the middle of october...applied to 30...so far 2 invites and 3 rejections...should i apply to more programs? what do you all think?

  #412

ok, with only 2 ivs so far, should i be panicking? is it time to add more programs? or considering my app has only been "complete" since monday, should i wait it out a little more? when is the time to panic? thanks guys...

  #413

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU USTMD2006!!!!i believe you still need to wait for one more week coz you just completed your ERAS application etc..then if there are no invitations add more programs...

  #414

Hi fellow pinoy. I am new to this forum. I guess you could help me with this dilemma that I am facing right now. I am a 2004 grad, 83, 92, pass (all first attempt), ECFMG certified. Still to take Step 3, 1 month observership, 2 USLOR. I applied to 30 IM programs. No interview, 2 rejections. sad

Should I apply to more programs? As much as possible, i dont want to apply anymore cause its costly.

Should i apply to another specialty like FM or Peds (which i think is easier compare to IM to get residency)? But i really want IM cause i want to do fellowship. What do you think?

I need your opinions and suggestions.

I dont want to waste another year because of my year of grad.

Salamat!sad

  #415

hi redhorse...

if you applied a bit late, around late sept or early oct, baka parating pa lang ang mga invites... keep fingers crossed...

im also still waiting... and waiting...

your credentials are very good, and i think you can get invites... pero kung nasa late oct na at wala pa, maybe you and I should consider applying to more programs... whether IM or another spec.

its a waiting game... and the pressure builds up as the game plays on...

good luck sa ating lahat!

  #416

I got a B1 visa today!! Yey!! Now I can start reviewing for my CS this December grin
I hope I can balance pre-residency here with review, as it is I don't even have time to access UWorld sad

  #417

thanks deoriverajr! i'm waiting to see how today goes...and then maybe i'll add more programs. my stats so far: 3 ivs/3 rejs out of the 30 programs that i've applied to. i'm hesitant to add more since $25 each na and that's a lot. yung 3 ivs nga lang i've spent a lot for plane tickets and hotels etc.

anyway, congrats xthine! where are you doing your pre-res and what hospital? what school did you graduate from? my batchmates are at that pre-res stage as well. good luck with cs!

  #418

Thank you ustmd2006 smiling face
Graduated from DLSU HSC way back in 2002. I'm a Psychiatry pre-res at the Makati Medical Center. Going on duty later...by the way have you guys heard about the G2 blast?

I'm planning to leave for California mid November for my CS 1st week of December. Would that be enough time for review?

  #419

xthine, what's the g2 blast? as for the cs...i think 2 weeks of serious full time studying is adequate. first aid is all you really need. although i did go through the cs tips and tricks (just google it and you should be able to go to the site) which has great mneumonics and stuff...and practicing is key so you get the timing down and get comfortable asking questions and doing quick focused physicals. good luck!

painfully silent day for me...and here's to another long weekend of waiting! hec how are you? where's everybody else? this thread has been pretty quiet...

  #420

redhorse, ur credentials are great esp +USCE...maybe u applied to very competetive/university programs?..did you apply anywhere in the NY area? most of the programs there are IMG friendly...if you did, just hang in there...

  #421

what a week! been extremely busy with work that's why i haven't been visiting the forums too much. We're finally publishing! NEJM baby! and it seems i might (!?) be pitched in for the presentation also, so i got my hands full.

Yep, like to extend my welcomes also to the new members...good luck y'all!

xthine - yep, ustmd is right, 2 weeks is enough, 1 month if you want to overdo it. Its just a matter of practice and knowing what to ask and being comfortable. If you can find a study partner, much better, it will give you a "feel" of how the encounter goes and how much time you need for everything. But chillax, its an easy exam, just practice practice practice.

ey ustmd, last year, I think i applied to 30 programs and i didn't get invites. I think 3 IVs at this time is pretty decent, not really sure about patho. anyway, i'm sure there are more invites coming, once the earlier invitees cancel their interviews. November will be pretty busy (not just for invitations, but more on rejections also). But if you feel uneasy about it, I guess it won't hurt to apply to a few more programs as long as your finances allow you to.

Someone asked how many applications each of us sent this year? I applied to 60 surgery programs, and 60 fm/anes programs.
So far, I got two invites - one for family med at north carolina, and one for prelim surg here in chicago. Both came this week, i didn't even have time to celebrate because of my freaking workload! So, yeah, even if it was a pretty hell week for work, those two invites were the highlights instead.

gluck everyone!

hec, where in chicago are you? i just found out that i've been given the opportunity to observe at northwestern for a month...so i'll be there in november! by the way, thanks for the advice.

it is getting expensive and if i decide to add any more...which will be few...i want to go for programs that i have a good chance of getting an interview. i'm kind of confused about what kind of applicant i am. i mean, my 3 invites are from university programs (which is great), but i haven't heard from the rest. at the same time, i haven't heard from any community programs either. i feel like i'm stuck right in the middle. the good programs don't want me cause they have better applicants. maybe the community programs don't want me because they think i'm using them as back-ups. i don't know. i'm probably over-analazing this as usual!

well, have a great weekend everyone!

  #423

I live with my aunt and uncle in the city, not in the suburbs, thats why its fairly easy for me to travel to work coz we're near the downtown area. I'm doing surgery research at Rush University. Northwestern is a very nice hospital, located in the heart of downtown, I think its near the lake. Been there once to visit a sick friend, and man, I was spellbound the moment i entered the lobby. It has that feel of a five star hotel rather than the usual stench of the emergency room that we're all used to. I think you'll enjoy your observership there, downtown chicago has so much to offer.

y'know, we really don't know what's going on in the heads of the PDs. we just don't know what they're really looking for. Both my interviews were also university programs, and i got rejections from those small town community hospitals. I just got tired thinking about it somehow....so i just told myself I will NEVER understand how they pick their applicants. So lets just let things be, and enjoy the ride, hehe.

hello, ustmd2006,
thanks for the reply.
I plan to apply 4 OB-GYNE
what are the chances that an IMG get accepted
will it really be very challenging?
btw, i did my internship at CGH
thanks.

  #425

Nice start of the week, invite from west virginia. FM though. If I could just convert these FM interviews into surgery invites, I'd be very much obliged. Yet, an interview is still an interview, so yeah I still feel honored receiving them.

g'luck everyone!
