Nice to hear from a pinoy here, been visiting this site for months and i guess you're the first i've met here. Can't help you though, we're in the same boat - i'm still on the road to match 2007, all that's left for me to do is take the CS in a few weeks time, and of course, enjoy the ride of the match season. So, which specialties are you applying? I'm risking my chances in surgery... i know it's tough, but hey, it won't hurt much if i try, as long as this is something that i really want to do for the rest of my life, you know eat, drink, speak surgery. by the way, i graduated 2004 at UST. How about u?

hello there! Good to hear from someone who's also a Filipino. I will not be applying for the 2007 matching coz i will be taking my Step 2CK this December so i wont be able to cut the deadline. Are you already in the States? Wow! surgery. that's a tough one. but since you're a Thomasian, im sure you will get it. hehehe. From what states will you be applying to? Have you seen the performance of UST in the recent board exam here? they are really good. I will be applying for IM program. oh by the way, im also from UST class 1999.

Go thomasians! yep, just saw the results a few weeks back, top 1 and 2, if i'm not mistaken, they're the first batch who had problem-based learning in their curriculum, just one batch lower than mine. so you're from batch 99? did you take residency first here? i'm still in the country but i'm leaving in a week's time. hopefully i'll get a good number of interviews. i applied to most hospitals in illinois, ny, ohio, michigan, massachusetts, pennsylvania, and a couple in each of the ff: georgia, florida, new jersey, iowa, missouri, minnesotta - well basically in the eastcoast. a total of 50. so you're applying to IM, any prospects? my girlfriend (also a thomasian!) is also applying for an IM position this match season. Good luck to you, it's a gruelling process but hey, once we get matched, i guess everything will be ok! good luck and hope to receive referrals from you in the future!

Hello there! Yup i graduated last 1999 so im kinda worried about the match since most of the programs some limited years after graduation. that's why i will be looking for externship program in the states since i will be a greencard holder soon. I didnt take any residency program here and i went on private practice. Can you help me with my inquiry? Have you done the MSPE, curriculum vitae, and personal statement? im kinda lost doing it. hope its not a big deal. When will you be leaving?

Regarding your question writing the CV and personal statement, here are my tips: CV: when you apply at eras, there's a common application form you need to accomplish and once you submit it, it will also serve as your CV. However, there are programs who want a personalized CV and they ask for it during interviews, so its also advisable to create one and have it handy during the interview. Just don't include your highschool and elementary awards.... there are so many formats and templates out there, just keep it clean and short (2 pages max), the book First Aid for the Match can help you regarding this. Personal statement: This one's tough to crack. it took me almost 2 weeks to write my intro, then another couple of weeks to revise and finalize the complete draft. I used a theme for my PS, and i think i made it work. I contacted all of my english professors during college and had my PS checked for grammar and thematic flow, and they all said it was perfect. I asked some med friends and residents, and they said it was great also. It was around 2 pages in lenght at first, but i trimmed it down to 1 and a half. Well, it's up to you what you want to write there, but basically it's about why you want to go into a certain specialty. Again, i used First Aid for the match to help me write this and tons of samples floating around the net, but the words should come from you, i believe you'll have a well written and unique PS if you pour your time on it. Good luck next year, and i'll be hanging around here if you have any questions.

Hay salamat! I got a reply hahahaa...medyo worried ako when the room gets quiet and I don't get any replies because it makes me feel out of this world..just kidding. I finished my residency at OMMC in 2004. Flew here to the US the same year and been working as a surgical asst in ophthalmology. Honestly, it is a blessing to have a job like this but it gets to the point where you grow tired of the same routine especially if you have been working for the past 5 years of your life in residency. Anyway, I am glad to know that you are there to offer help. I am planning to take step 1 and 2 next year and I am just having my gears up ready. Uwi ako ng Pinas ng November to go to my alma mater because since 2005, they have not sent yet my transcripts to the ECFMG. Apparently, naka-park lang ang papers sa dean's office. How soon can I apply for a matching? Is it right that I cannot make any moves at all concerning the residency matching not until I receive my usmle scores and transcripts? Please enlighten me. Thanks. P.S. review materials are very expensive here. Gosh! Over 5T US$ ang isang complete set with cd-rom and reading materials. Nice to hear from you. Glad to have pinoys in this room.

I heard about PLM regarding the late submission of credentials. anyway, the application for the match for next year residency has started already. Step 1 is at least need for the application so i guess you have to apply for the match next year i guess. with regards to review materials, i suggest that you go to Ebay.com. some students and those who finished their USMLE's are selling their materials at reasonable prices. i got my review materials thru that website. how did you apply as physician assistant? can you help me also about it? will you get an LOR from those ophthalmologists you assisted?

I am actually working as a surgical asst.. I found the job through an ad on the sunday paper and luckily, they accepted me (medyo nakamenos sila ng training of course kasi nga duktor po) and for awhile, they admitted they were reluctant about my credentials being over than what was accepted. Anyway, physician assts require licenses and medical assts on the other hand may or may not require a license for the job. Tip lang: don't be discouraged if they turn you down when it comes to medically related jobs like PA or MA kasi nga overqualified raw tayo. Yes, I believe that they will give me LOR later.

hello to my kababayans! hecmd23, its ok to have some rejections and its part of it. hey dude, tell me what hospitals you will be having your observership. i will try to find one when im there already. toxic_doc, observership is not really a hands on clinical experience. but you get a chance to see and observe the clinical practise in the states. and i think you have a better experience coz you already worked as physical assistant which i think is just the same. hi trishue! where are you having your residency? can you tell me your experience, please?

I reviewed last year but wasn't able to take it kasi I started working na. dati may mga kasabay pa ko mag-review but this time... lahat ng mga kasabay ko tapos na nga step 1. I'm so happy.... may mga pinoy dito and we'll be each others support group. Toxic_doc: san ka dito sa Cali? I'm in long beach.

Happy doc, I am actually in medford, oregon but will move up to ontario, california anytime soon. do you need a study partner? i'll be happy to be one. Karamihan sa mga classmates are based in california and though some of them ventured into nursing (uso eh), they are still interested in trying out the mle. Keep in touch happy doc. I took the courage of taking it the first time (both step1 and step 2 just to gauge my weaknesses). Now i know where i should be standing that is why i am planning to take them both again asap basta naka-settle in na ko sa california. Keep in touch.

Hi guys, I'm an intern in Danbury Hospital, Internal Medicine (Categorical)... My experience with the match or my experience right now? hehe... Anyways, the American Medical System is different from back home and personally, it's very very different... I do not want to sound like I'm belittling our medical schools but it's soooo different here... The way I learned how to get around in my hospital is when I started asking MY MEDICAL STUDENTS how they do their Hx, PE, DDx... it's all different.. and it's no wonder why they prefer AMGs over IMGs... it's not really about the scores but how they were trained, how they were taught... and it's just a far cry from how we were "trained". The reason why they prefer people who already have USCE lies in what I just said in my earlier paragraph... and quite frankly, I couldn't agree more. I love my hospital/program.. it's a community hospital but we get to interact with the specialists more because it's so unlike the University set-up that we were used to back in medschool. My program has a fellowship in Cardiology which is quite new... if you want a relaxed program... then Danbury is a place for you... there can be crazy rotations but half of the intern year we are on elective so it's really fun... you get to have time off, and work hours are strict.. and imagine having a call every 6 days? hehe... Anyways, sobra nang pagpupuri sa program ko to.. just check out my review in scutwork.com... the latest one is mine.
