hi jase today i went to UFT library and id back with the plenty of questions!i met the guy who was preparing for osce and u have no ide he had got 6 EKGs in the exam!so i found its more luck than everything else.He said if in CRS q's they ask u for certain answers like (up to 5)u r not suppose to always have 5 answers u just will answer as much as u think pt needs. like if u feel just 4 investigations are necessory even if the questons allowed u up to 5 u will answer 4!but when i was redaing old questions for practicing in the end of the book exactly explained how thay give us marks and even when they ask u for 5 its pssible to be more correct answers but u will allow to choose just 5 of them.that was a little confusing but i think he is wrong what is your idea ?how did u answer ?did u answer up to exact numbers they want or less?..thanks again and tell me how it goes youy residency application?did u try?... nazila

Yes that is a rumor, till date no USMLE results can substitute the LMCC exams...they say they might in another 5 years or so. U have no choice but to take EE and QE1

You can answer 4 answers even if they say upto 5. But if you choose More than 5 then your answer is a automatic zero. donot exceed the number specified. Just answer the simple tests first for every case, What you would really order in real life. When i came out of the exam I had no idea what i did in the exam. I was confused and i felt that i didn't do well at all. More over don't panic looking at the canadian grads, some them will finish this exam in two hours or so. It will give a feeling as though you are lacking behind. Keep your cool. Since you have seen the old questions, The format explained how to score is the correct format. You get partial marks out of one. just take one complete exam and try to do that exam in a simulated time and if you score around 65% I think it should be ok to pass the exam. One more thing i would like to tell you is that CRS component is 25% of the total exam, 75% of the marks comes from the morning session. May you are right about the EKG's, I didn't get any but i got question with pictures along with them. I guess this exam is different for everyone. Anyways when are you taking the exam?

Hi nazila, I am appearing for imgo osce in september, still preparing for it. I don't have any idea about this exam but hoping for the best. For carms there is still time so not worried about that yet. If you have any information regarding toronto osce, please let me know about it. My email is jsohal25@yahoo.ca

I am pretty sure the Ontario OSCE will be the same as the Alberta OSCE, 10 stations plus one as a rest station. Each stations will be alotted 10 minutes each. Remember the word FOCUSSED. if they want a shoulder exam, only do a shoulder exam (inspection, palpation of landmarks, range of motion and special tests) plus reflexes, don't start examining the whole neurological system exam on the upper limbs. A couple of tips Ive picked up thru my prep for Alberta OSCE:learn how to do fundoscopy and how to comment on ur findings from fundoscopy, learn how to read an ecg and manage ACLS cases, they cud give u heart block, MI or anything like that. GUD LUCK!

Does anyone really know wat the point of the IMGO osce is? I mean all applications for Ontario are going to thru CARMS this year, so wats the point of taking this OSCE, CARMS don't require it!

Hi nisha, you are right, technically you don't need imgo osce but in a very suddle way they have written that program directors might give prefrence to the applicants who have pass standing on CE1 exam. I guess that explains a lot. It is exactly like carms, you can apply for carms with mccee, but they won't call you for an interview. What do you think about it? please post a reply about ophthalmoscopic findings. How would you comment on it? Please explain in detail if you have time. Thank you. Jase.

For ophthalmoscopic findings: Say I am seeing a normal optic disc, optic cup, comment on the ratio, the arteries, veins, red reflex, or if u see them any abnormalities like hemmorhages, cotton wool spots etc. In a CNS exam u might jus wanna say u'd like to do it, but in DM, HTN, or eye exam cases u shud actually do it. Remb, ur right eye, right hand pt's right eye..examiners prob look for little details.

Hi Nisha, So do you have to say everything loud about every examination you perform or just for ophthalmoscopic exam? someone told me that you have to give a running commentary with everything you do as though you are telling the examiner what you are doing. What about the notes? Do you have take notes of the HPI as we do in CSA to write a patient note? What type of questions they ask you at end of the enconter? Please tell us what ever you know from your experience. Thanks.

Yes Jase, keep the running commentary coming...else there's no other way for the examiner to know what ur looking for and or wat u find. They may prompt u from time to time and say "u are having an area of consolidation in the lung" giving u a que to test for whisperin pect. and egophony...I am not sure bout the writing part as I have never given an OSCE before..but I iknow for sure in Alberta's exam der's no writing. But the examiner may stop u when der's one min left and ask u a quest. like wat are u d/d's or management. Der's a list of MCQE2 cases floating around, see if u can get them from some Canadian grad ( i don't have an electronic copy) those are good for practice....rest i told u of the books im using. Just know ur physical exam, be confident, and u shud b fine.

Okay galz and guyz..those of u goin for the Alberta/Ontario OSCE dis time, here r sum imp instructions..if u guyz r takin the MCCQE-2, instr. r on the MCC webpage, i can post those later if u want. OSCE – Objective Structured Clinical Examination The design of the examination is to sample as many medical skills as possible involved in making a differential diagnosis. Some cases might concentrate on the principles of management. The standard is that of a graduating Canadian medical student. There will be an examiner in each station who will be completing a pre determined checklist covering cognitive and non cognitive abilities. There are 10 stations involving Standardized Patient interactions who are trained to portray a real patient. The stations are 10 minutes in length with 3 minutes between each station to allow the candidate to read the instructions. Tips: Think Out Loud – while doing a physical examination so that the examiner knows what you are doing ie: observation, inspection, percussion, palpation and auscultation you must speak out loud. Ie: "This is what I am listening to" "I am palpating the right lower quadrant of the abdomen looking for any abnormal masses" etc All your interactions should be with the standardized patient. Do not speak with the examiner unless it is to answer a question that he/she may ask you. The only notes you may take during the exam will be on an official notebook which is supplied to you at the exam start. Suggested reading & study material: Mastering the OSCE/CSA (2nd edition) Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking (Bickley) 8th edition We will provide candidate orientation prior to the exam for each group. There will be a brief question and answer session at that time.

I think it will, but don't just concentrate on history taking, make sure u practise ur physical examination well and timed. We only have 10 minutes, and u shud be clinically proficent.

Hi Nisha, I am trying to time myself but having some difficulty. Hoping for the best. Do you have any idea about MSPE/ DEAN'S letter, I am having trouble finding a sample copy of this letter. I found one on the AAMC website but it's very long and my school is not aware of anything like that so I don't think they are going to make one for me like that. Do you have any suggestion regarding this?

I know it's tough, but don't give up! Keep in mind that we're competing in the first iteration dis year, in parallel in most provinces..so we do defitnitly stand a chance. I've got 2 days left before my OSCE so I'm runnin thru exams today..pray pray pray! Practice talking aloud to urself, and saying over and over again "I'm looking for ___ , I am listening for ____". Show the examiner you know wat ur talking about, and be really empathetic (if they can't do range of movement actively assist them and make it passive! As for ur MSPE..I guess u cud write up an example which includes most of the things they talk about, marks, extracurricular, citizenship, clinical performance etc. and give it to ur dean's office to make one similar to that. I personally submitted a Dean's letter of reccomendation which states my final proff MBBS role number, marks and sum of my other meager achievements, and that I was a gud student. My college is MAHA lazy so I'm thankful for wat iv got.
