CA letter is valid in California only... the sake of residency ,california is NOT a state in US,

CA letter is NOT needed when you apply for residency. You can simply mention in your covering letter as one of the LORs and assign it to CA programs along with other LORs. They will automatically know that you have applied for it and havnt got it yet. If you are accepted at any program they require you to submit your CA letter before starting residency.

If you ECFMG certified then apply for CA letter now and you will get it before you start residency. In the mean time programs can call you for an interview without CA letter.

shadia,

Its not impossible to get a residency in CA. IMGs do not apply here , not because "it is even difficult for AMGs" but because of CA letter (8 months process, hassle, 600 or 700 dollars fee for processing and finger printing etc etc). I live in northern california and many of my IMG friends have gotten jobs on average credentials ---ofcourse not in San Francisco but in smaller towns 2 or 3 hours from SFO. Same is the case with LA.
