As you must be aware L2 visa holders have been cleared for active employment for the period of the said visa ... Please how does this apply to residency program for IMGs if the visa covers the duration of the program ...

L-2 comes with EAD... Which is according the one of BBB's old posts is the "second best thing" next to a green card. So you are lucky if you have an EAD when you start your residency...

On the other hand I am not an immigration lawyer or PD, so I am not 100% positive. Let's see what BBB has to say about L2/ EAD... she/he seems to know the answers to these questions! :-)

I have no clue about an L2 visa. No one here has ever started with one.

Dear BBB,

and what is your opinion on EAD? Is it still the second best thing next to a green card?

If you can work on an EAD until you get your perm residency, then why wouldn't a program want it. BUT!!! If you know that you can only work on an EAD for a year, then you have to transfer to an H1b visa, then you need to let the program know that you won't have your green card in enough time to complete your residency. We have had people on EAD that have gotten their green card - then it works great. I just don't know how long a person is given an EAD.

Good luck

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLIES,

ACTUALLY AN L2 DID NOT HAVE WORK AUTHORIZATION(LIKE H4) UNTIL ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, SO I GUESS THAT IS WHY IT IS NOT BEEN AN ISSUE IN THE PAST FOR RESIDENCY, I STILL REALLY NEED TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT IT.

i think the L2 EAD is a valid option..but needs renewal every yr(like any other EAD)...i don't see why it shouldn't be possible to do a residency on this coz u do get a SSN and work authorization.

best thing..contact an immigration attorney and get ur answer..

my opinion is that u will have to explain all this to programs before both applyin and while iviewin. bcoz then ur program selection also changes once u have ead. and if an experienced pc like bbb has problems with l2 - then i bet u that ur in for a hell of a jobsmiling face
remem many pds have problems even with j1 and h1 and hence refuse for any and all visassmiling face
