What are the indications for disease modifying meds in reumatoid arthritis?

  #2

development of erosions and joint space narrowing is an indiaction

also moderate to severe RA with pain stiffness and swelling

www.arthritis.co.za/dmard.html has some useful info

Simply put -- Methotrexate is usually the treatment of choice for patients with rheumatoid arthritis who do not respond to NSAIDs. I think this is enough for me as far this exam is concerned (don't waste ur time in learing hundreds of indications)

but NSAIDS and aspirin work, depends on presentation and severity of the disease.

mild disease: nsaids, aspirin, COX-2 inhibitors. (they can still be an aswer on the test)
moderate to severe: MTX is a good option as GDS2008 just said, but because of the wider range of side effects, you should avoid them as much as you can.

maybe must be carful with COX-2 INHIBITORS because have been related to heart disease lately.

and yes, the mayority end up using METHOTREXATE.
