I'm a foreign medical student (5th year out of 6). I'm considering a residency in the US and am currently in the process of gathering all info. There have been some discussions in other forums about how doing an elective or observership etc. in the US might later affect your chances of getting into a residency program. I'm confused. I read, that if you did a rotation in i.e. Texas, you would never be allowed to perform your residential training there. I assume there are different policies for every state? Well, in the NY Department of Education's Bulletin it says, for the electives performed while medical student, one needs a Letter of Eligibility and is allowed to take a total of 12 weeks of electives in NY state. Everything exceeding the 12 weeks is considered an observership. Are there any IMG's among you, who did the 12 weeks worth of rotations and got into a residency afterwords? This is supposed to be a question with an emphasis on NY, but other experiences are welcome, too. Has anyone exceeded the 12 weeks (and did i.e. a 4 week observership after the electives) and got a residency spot in NY state? I still have almost 2 years to go, but I want to plan my rotations carefully. If I apply for a residency in the US after graduation, it will be in OB/GYN. So, the LOR's, if I do any US-electives while still studying, will they count too? Are those good in any specialty, or should I only aim for OB/GYN experience? That is, could I use a LOR I obtained in a Medicine elective in the US for my ERAS profile? I know these are many questions, and I would really appreciate it if anyone found time to answer them! THANK YOU!!!!
